Easy and Delicious French Dip Pastrami Sandwich - A country club copycat recipe! @natashaskitchen

The French Dip Pastrami Sandwich,.. my favorite! A hot, juicy, cheesy, mushroomy sandwich loaded with tender pastrami in a toasted hoagie roll and all dipped in a fabulous au jus (broth). Yeah… I got hooked on these when my late and very sweet boss,

Pearl, took me to a country club by her home for lunch. These are really just as good as I remembered them. This really is a simple French Dip Pastrami Sandwich, but has country club written all over it! Make these and they’ll totally make you feel like your dining out.

How to Assemble the French Dip:

1. Saute Mushrooms until golden and soft. Sprinkle with garlic salt and pepper to taste. Remove mushrooms from pan and set aside. In the same skillet (without cleaning it), add 1 1/2 cups beef broth, season broth to taste (you want it to be flavorful for use as a dip) then remove from heat – this broth is your “au jus” dipping sauce.

French Dip sandwich with dipping sauce
French Dip Sandwiches are easier to make than you think. Be sure to try the au jus dipping sauce to go with them.
Prep Time: 15 minutes
Cook Time: 10 minutes
Total Time: 25 minutes

Ingredients

Servings: 4 large sandwiches
  • 1 lb sliced pastrami beef deli meat
  • 4 hoagie rolls
  • 8 slices provolone cheese or 1 1/2 cups mozzarella cheese, shredded
  • 1/2 lb about 10-12 mushrooms, thickly sliced
  • Garlic Salt & Black Pepper, to taste
  • 1 1/2 cups Beef Broth

Instructions

  • Saute Mushrooms until golden and soft. Sprinkle with garlic salt and pepper to taste. Remove mushrooms from pan and set aside. In the same skillet (without cleaning it), add 1 1/2 cups beef broth and boil for a few minutes to reduce slightly. Season broth to taste (you want it to be flavorful for use as a dip) then remove from heat - this broth is your "au jus" dipping sauce.
  • Heat a large pan over medium heat. Add a small pat of butter and when butter is done sizzling, Saute the cut side of the rolls just until golden. Divide the pastrami meat evenly among the four sandwiches. Top with cheese and mushrooms.
  • Bake at 450 for 4-5 minutes or until cheese melts and meat is hot.
  • Serve each sandwich with an individual ramekin of AuJus – Dip with every bite.

This looks delicious!!! But I’d love to know the fat and cholesterol content per sandwich before trying it.

I don’t typically include all the nutritional benefits because of the time constraint that I have. I really need to hire some help to do that for me! When I need a quick answer though; I have used Calorie Count their recipe analyzer is free.

I was wondering what size ramekin you used, how many oz are they. These sandwiches look amazing 🙂

Hi Michelle! You can use a ramekin or a small bowl. I believe these are about 4 ounces. I hope you love the recipe!

I’m going to try this tonight using flour tortillas instead of the hoagie. That way I can make them individually since bread doesn’t do very well in the fridge. So I can make the mushrooms (with onion) and broth ahead of time and store in a container in the fridge and just pull out a fresh tortilla each time and bake. Don’t know how the tortillas will go. Excited to try making it though!

Just what I’m looking for. Went shopping today and bought Trader Joe’s brand pastrami. I will buy some cheese, mushrooms and hoagie rolls this evening. I already have the beef stock.
    Thanks, Victor Romulus

Back in the 50’s Kings drive in Riverside, Ca (and others) had pastrami sandwich on a roll. that was smothered with a red sauce, kind of like bbq, a little sweet, awesome delicious. I think they called it a French sauce. Trying to figure out recipe.

In the picture after step two, the bread looks like it’s been toasted, but I don’t see that in any of the steps. Am I missing it somewhere? Thanks.

Hi Scott, great question! I’m not sure how that step disappeared from the text but you are absolutely correct! I updated the recipe to reflect what my photo shows. Before adding the topping, Heat a large pan over medium heat. Add a small pat of butter and when butter is done sizzling, Saute the cut side of the rolls just until golden.

Is there a substitute for pastrami? I couldn’t find it anywhere! Including Costco and Winco :/

Tanya, a thin sliced lean deli beef should work. I guess different locations carry different items since our Winco and Costco both have pastrami. I hope you’ll love the sandwich 😀.

Is it weird that I haven’t tried turkey pastrami? 🙂 Do you make your own or is it store-bought?
