Strawberries Romanoff is a no-bake, easy and luscious summer dessert. It is the adult version of Strawberries and Cream (one of my favorite recipes since childhood). This dessert feels and tastes fancy but it’s refreshingly simple to make and it is perfect for summer parties!

The whipped cream topping is easy and just works; a simple sweetened whipped cream with sour cream folded into it, which gives it amazing flavor and creaminess. The sour cream keeps the whipped cream fairly stable. I’ve seen (and tested) some variations out there using ice cream, but it quickly melts into a big soupy mess and doesn’t work. Also, don’t add any extra flavoring to the cream – keep it simple. There, now I’ve told you so you won’t be tempted to try it also ;).

Ingredients for Strawberries Romanoff:

*Grand Marnier is an orange flavored liqueur that can be purchased at most liquor stores. If you don’t need it for any other recipe, by all means buy the $4 tiny bottle that is just the right size for this recipe; 1 oz. The bigger bottles can be pretty spendy so I buy the tiny bottles for when I need them, like for this berry tiramisu recipe!

3. To serve, stir strawberries then divide between 6 serving glasses or bowls. You can spoon a little syrup over the berries if you like. You can also use this syrup to soak a cake – so good!! Spoon cream over strawberries, dividing evenly. You can also use an ice cream scoop with trigger release for a nice rounded puff of cream. Serve right away or chill and enjoy within 2 hours of assembly.

I am looking for a great desert and this seems like a good fit. I like the idea but how sweet is it? Is there a way to make it more tangy? Thank you in advance.

Hi Tatyana! It depends on the strawberries, if they are sweet, you can use less sugar, but if your strawberries are more tart, then you can use the full amount of sugar. I don’t think this dessert is too sweet. Plus, the addition of sour cream adds a nice tangy flavor.

We were given this recipe by the owners of a German/Italian/American restaurant in historic Highlands North Carolina in the early 90’s. Long since lost and forgotten. So excited to stumble upon this recipe as my favorite desert at Herman and Hildegard
Strausses restaurant where they fed our teams of golfers.
Delicious and just as I remembered. Thanks for the recipe and memories! ( I see the restaurant is now Wolfgangs and has been featured in Southern Living)

Hi Natasha! Love your recipes and love how simple you keep them! What can I substitute to make it with NO alcohol?

Hi Sarah, if you wanted to make it alcohol-free, you could macerate the cherries with the sugar. You could also add a splash of orange juice if desired.

The recipe calls for 4 Tbsp grand marnier* orange liqueur divided…
then it all goes in with the strawberries.
Was a portion intended for the topping? 🤔

Hi Jon, I think the word divided is a misprint. It should not be in there. Sorry about that. I removed it.

One Tbs is one ounce. So, which is the correct amount of Grand Marinier for the recipe? One Tbs or 4 Tbs?
    Thanks.

Hi Jacqueline, 4 Tbsp of Grand Marnier is correct.

I think 1 tbsp is 15 cc which is equivalent of 1/2 oz. One ounce would be two tbsp.

      Not true! One-eighth (1/8) cup – 1oz (8oz=1c). It is 2T per oz!!
      Also, 1 Tbsp= 15ml or appr. 2teaspons
      2 Tablespoons=30ml or appr. 1oz.
