Watch the BLT Sandwich Video:
We’re sharing all of our best tips for making your best BLT Sandwich. This is one of the most popular sandwiches in America. Watch the video tutorial and see why everyone is talking about this recipe.
What is a BLT?
BLT stands for Bacon, Lettuce and Tomato. Ok, ok, so we snuck in some avocado which makes it a BALT, but once you try this iconic sandwich with avocado, there is no going back. Everyone loves the flavor profile of an authentic BLT which is why we now have a BLT Salad and even a Breakfast BLT Sandwich.
The Best Sandwich Sauce Spread:
We fell in love with this sandwich sauce when we tried the Chicken Bacon Avocado Sandwich at Kneaders restaurant. I asked for an extra side of sauce, took it home, and re-created it.
It’s just 3 ingredients and the combination is memorable: mayonnaise, sour cream, and a little bit of yellow mustard. Try it on your next BLT and you will have a new favorite.
How to Cook Bacon:
The easiest (and least messy) way to cook bacon is to bake it in the oven. We prefer regular thin-cut bacon for BLT’s because it’s easier to bite through, but thick-cut bacon will also work well if that is what you have on hand.
- Regular Bacon: arrange in a single layer over a foil-lined rimmed baking sheet and bake in the center of the oven at 400˚F for 18-20 minutes.
- Thick-Cut Bacon: Line a rimmed baking sheet with foil and place a wire rack over the foil. Arrange bacon over the rack and bake at 400˚F for 30-35 minutes. You can omit the rack but you will need to flip the bacon halfway through so the bottom gets crisp.
How to Assemble a BLT Sandwich:
- Start by cooking your bacon then preparing your sauce and toasting bread.
- Spread 1 Tbsp sauce over the bottom bun then layer with lettuce, tomatoes, bacon, avocado, and a sprinkle of salt and pepper.
- Spread another 1 Tbsp sauce over the top bun and place it over the avocado.
Can I Make a BLT Ahead?
A BLT sandwich is delicious for a work or school lunch. To keep the avocados vibrant, toss the avocado slices in a little lemon juice before adding to the sandwich.
To keep the bread from getting soggy, package the tomatoes and sauce separately and add them just before serving.

Hi Mandy! Thanks for watching. I hope you love the recipe!
Delicious! Grilling the bread is a must. Loved the sauce as well. Thank you!
You’re welcome, Lisa! Agree on that, glad you love it.
I was getting ready to make a BLT, with of course your crusty French bread..was looking for a flavored mayo.. and found your recipe..the toasted bread is genius.
This was great!
So glad you loved it, Connie!
Hands down the best I’ve ever had! Thank you for your delicious recipes!
That’s so great! It sounds like you have a new favorite, Joan!
Absolutely delicious! The sauce was totally spot on!! Will be making this for rest of my life!! Thanks for sharing Natasha.
Hi Suzanne. It makes me happy to know this recipe made that much of an impact. Thank you for sharing. 🙂
Excellent! The compilation and the sauce were superb. I will def make this one again, added to the roster.
So glad you enjoyed this recipe, Mary!
My family loves your recipes! We got creative this time, and fried green tomatoes using your zucchini breading and added them to these sandwiches. So good! Thank you 😋
That’s great! I bet they were delicious! Thanks for sharing.
Hi, this recipe looks lovely, but I have a question about the sauce. Is there a substitute for the sour cream that you think would work?
Hi Emily, I don’t know of any substitute for sour cream that I can recommend as I have not tried any substitution for it yet.
Hi Emily, plain Greek yogurt would work well in place of sour cream.
Best BLT I’ve ever made or ordered anywhere! I didn’t have avocado but otherwise made this exactly as written. I used Sarah Lee Artesano bread and thick cut bacon. I was surprised that such a simple sauce elevated the sandwich so much. My husband generally avoids mayo, but he was like your son and used extra as dip! Mmmm!
So glad to hear that! Thank you for the excellent review.
What bread do you recommend for the bacon sandwich. Hard to find thick bread where I live.
Hi Celia, any bread of your choice should be alright.
Actually the simple Sause idea was a great addition, I kicked it up a bit by adding a Tbsp of ground horseradish.
Sounds delicious!
I want to know what kind of bread for BLAT sandwich? I love eating it very much. Thanks!
Hi Judith, It was a thick-sliced artisan bread (pre-sliced and purchased at Fred Meyer in the regular bread aisle).
My favorite is Dave’s killer bread. The yellow Seed is the best, at least for me. Even good old fashioned white wonder bread, however they seem to have changed the recipe for the bread. It does not seem as soft and fluffy as before.
The simplicity of this sauce and addition of adding avocado to the sandwich takes it to a new level of yum! Natasha, you are amazing!
So good! I’m so glad you enjoyed it!
Consistently fantastic recipes. Thank you
Leaving a review here is a whole job :/
crispy crispy bacon yum
Thanks a lot, David. We appreciate the review!
I add a few thin slices of brie to lie next with the avocado. It can be salty, so don’t slice them thick.
Although the sandwich recipe is great, I have become OBSESSED with the best sauce! To say it’s the best, it’s an understatement. So simple, yet so good. I literally use it on everything – breakfast sandwiches, on eggs benedict, spread it on all sandwiches…I don’t understand it, but it’s just THAT good!
Wow, that is awesome feedback. Thank you so much for your kind words, we appreciate it!
I have a binder three inches thick of recipes I’ve made (pre and during Covid). This is going in there. The sauce is magic with the rest.
Wow, a binder full of recipes – that’s amazing!! I’m glad this one made the cut!
I love a good blt. I add fresh basil and a squeeze of lemon to mayo. and process, it really compliments the fresh tomato and lettuce. Don’t forget the avocado.
Thanks for sharing that with us, Greg and for giving this recipe a good review!
Oh man, my mouth was watering when you guys were eating those BLTs. Definitely gonna try that secret sauce with caution though, gotta keep that waistline in check.
So good! I hope you try these soon!
Scrumptious! Just made this sandwich this evening. Both my husband and I loved it! Making it better still is that we used our first-for-the-season tomato from our garden. Oh and the sauce? Fantastic! I will be making this sandwich again and again. Thanks for this fantastic recipe.
The perfect way to use garden tomatoes! I’m so glad you enjoyed it, Maureen!
Tried this last night and my wife and I loved it! Definitely a game changer! Thank you!
That’s great, I am so happy to hear that, Ricky!
Best ever BLT sandwich I’ve ever had…Thank you for all your great recipes.
So awesome! Thank you for your fantastic review, Claudine.
Natasha
Loved your BLT Sandwich
I’m so glad you enjoyed it!
What bread are you using in this recipe?
Hi Debbie, It was a thick-sliced artisan bread (pre-sliced and purchased at Fred Meyer in the regular bread aisle).
Mmmmm so good! Used thick cut bacon, truffle mayo, and cheery tomatoes (didn’t have anything else). Served with your creamy cucumber salad. Would eat this again in a heartbeat!
Yum! That sounds so good right now! Thank you for sharing that with me, Kendall!
The most delicious sandwich I’ve ever cooked in my life 🥰 Thank you for the recipe ❤️ You are just fantastic 🔥🔥🔥
I am all smiles reading your comment. Thank you for the amazing review!
Wow! Natasha, this was magical. Loved it to bits.
I’m so glad you enjoyed it!
Didn’t see the sauce being as good as it was, well played 🙂
THanks, Chris. Glad you liked it!
I wont make a blt without this sauce again
I’m so glad you enjoyed this sandwich & sauce!
Your BLT sandwich was a huge hit. The sauce puts it over the top. Delish!!
Hello William, thank you for your awesome feedback!
May I make a suggestion? And this is going to sound really picky – but it makes all the difference in the world. When putting the sandwich together, put the tomato either first of last so that it is in direct contact with the sauce. It totally ramps the taste up several notches, because the acid combines with the sauce. Yum!
Good idea, thanks for your suggestion! I should try that next time.
Delicious! I love that the sauce is only 3 simple ingredients but it takes the sandwich to a whole other level! Thank you so much for the recipe, I’ll be trying your brownie recipe next
You’re welcome, Zara! I’m so happy you enjoyed this recipe!
Amazing sauce and sandwich! Added a fried egg, making it a BLEAT (lol) and used Dijon in the sauce. Absolutely delicious…served it with corn on the cob…what a fabulous summer dinner! Another winner Natasha; thank you!!!
I’m so happy you enjoyed this sandwich, Cheryl! Thank you for this wonderful review!
This is such a great sandwich ! I’m making it again today for lunch. I have beautiful tomatoes, thick sliced bacon, and now I just need to go to grocery store to pick up the avocados ! Yay ! Thanks, for sharing ! I watch you all the time !
Yummy! I am so happy to know that you enjoyed this recipe!
This BLT recipe takes it to the next level. The sauce, butter toasted bread and avocado are all game changers in this sandwich. Love it!!
I’m so happy you enjoyed this recipe, Debbie! Thank you for that wonderful review!
Best BLT ever. Thank You so much for this recipe. A half was enough for my husband and I. Followed the recipe to the letter. Next time I may mash the avocado but other than that best BLT ever!
That’s so great! It sounds like you have a new favorite, Elizabeth!
Hi! What specific kind of bread did you use?
It was a thick-sliced artisan bread (pre-sliced and purchased at Fred Meyer in the regular bread aisle).
Always our favorite. BLTA and a sprinkle of lemon pepper on the tomatoes. Yum, yum. Like the added toasting in the pan.
Yes so delicious! This is one of our favorite sandwiches too.
I made this for a lite dinner last night. It was a big hit! We love BLT’s and the sauce and avocado kicked it up several notches. Will definitely make again. Thanks for all the delicious and easy recipes.
I’m so glad you enjoyed it, Liz! Thank you for the wonderful review!
Is the mustard French’s yellow, Dijon or English very hot mustard Colman’s?
Hi Nina, we used regular yellow mustard!
Greetings from the UK -Fabulous recipe can I sub the sour cream with buttermilk? Can’t get hold of it right now. Or do you have any other suggestions. Also, if I was making this vegan any ideas for a sub for sour cream. I would use vegan mayo and shitake mushroom bacon…. thanks
Hello Nina, I haven’t personally tried using buttermilk as a substitute I imagine vegan mayo should work well but I don’t know of any substitute for sour cream that I can recommend.
How about using %fat free yogurt instead of the sour cream? W W does it all the time and I think it works well.
Hi Phyllis, I haven’t tested that with this sauce but I think it’s definitely worth experimenting. I hope you love the BLT sandwich and sauce!
The sauce, sour cream, mayo and mustard is great on potato salad or mac salad, just Dijon rather than yellow mustard.
Thanks for sharing that with us, Jacky!
Natasha!
I made this today.. It was awesome!! I love love your recipes.. Keep them coming… I would love to see you make a quick and easy lobster tail.
Thank you!!!
Thank you so much for your excellent feedback! You can check out my Lobster Tail Recipes
Hi Natasha!! I’m a huge fan of yours. I LOVE all your recipes that I’ve tried so far. Can’t wait to try the sauce next time I make BLT .
Thanks for your compliments and support, Becky. I hope you love every recipe that you try!
We had your BLT for lunch, it was delicious as you had promised. The sauce is what I put on my Potato Salad, SO good as a sandwich spread…Thank you for that clever idea. Unfortunately, my Avocado was green (seems like they are always too ripe, or not ripe enough.) You and your little boy are the cutest! I love your videos. It was easy to get my 3 grown Gen Z grandsons to watch your videos and try some of your recipes.
I’m so happy you enjoyed this recipe! Thank you for sharing that with me!
This is a very good sandwich.
I love BLT’s and for this one, the sauce makes a big difference. It should be called BLTA though.
Definitely can’t skip the sauce! We love avocado so definitely like a BLTA! That’s so awesome!
BLAT!
FYI, my daughter has been calling mine the BLAT for ages.
I love that! A blat is far superior to a blt for any avocado lover!
Natasha, Thank you for this video. The next day I made the B.L.T. with the best sauce and it was a big hit with my wife Judy. She loved the way the sandwich was put together and she loved the sauce. Thank you very Much
I’m so happy you’re both enjoying this video, David! Thank you for that great review!
A little trick to save your clothes. When you take a bite, often the tomato skins or the edge of the bacon will not bite away free and drag ingredients out to run down your chin and clothes. I notch the edges of the tomato skins with a knife which gives you a cleaner bite. Same with the bacon BEFORE cooking and also smaller pieces of lettuce. Hopefully you will get to wear you clothes the rest of the day with this little trick. Great recipe Natasha. Thank you.
That’s a great trick! Thank you so much for sharing that with us Barry!!
Your sauce is basically my potato salad dressing. Now I must have it on my next
BLT! Yum.
I hope you love it Kay!
My guess how you did that trick is that you made a hole in the bag and someone was holding the bag and gave you the food through the hole in the bag
Thank you for watching Rubin! I’m glad you enjoyed our trick!
I love this recipe it is probably my favorite recipe especially the secret sauce
That’s just awesome! Thank you for sharing that with me!
Ok, I think I need to make this for lunch!! Love a good, classic blt! This is so good!
I’m so happy you enjoyed that Natalie!
The sauce sounds awesome, I will give it a try next time. We just had BLATS (sounds funny right) down the beach. Made a big sub on garlic bread (loaf, reheated) because it was a mustgo. OMGoodness!
One hint for oven cooked bacon – cover it with a sheet of parchment and there’s no splatters to clean up.
Thank you so much for sharing that with me Greg! I’m so glad you enjoyed this recipe!
This EASY blt sandwich recipe is my go-to for lunch! I love the sauce too!
Isn’t it the best! Thank you for that great review Valentina!
This is everything a gourmet sandwich should be, and then some! Looking forward to enjoying this classic sandwich for lunch today, indeed!
I hope you love this recipe, Sara! Thank you for that awesome review!
I made the BLT tonight it was perfect.
So great to hear that!
