Grilling corn on the cob in foil is one of the easiest and tastiest ways to make corn! Add in a delicious lemon dill butter and this grilled corn on the cob is an essential part of summer.

Corn on the cob is a staple in our house all summer long and we get excited every year when corn season returns. We love those plump, tender kernels that spontaneously squirt when you bite into them.

Why Should You Grill Corn on the Cob in Foil?

When you grill corn on the cob in foil, the prep is minimal and the kernels turn out so moist and flavorful. The foil traps the steam and corn juices to keep the ears from drying out so there’s no need for pre-soaking the corn.

On hot summer days, you can avoid turning on your stove by cooking foil-wrapped corn outside on the grill. Cooking corn in foil requires hardly any prep and is the easiest method. It is also quick and takes just 15-20 minutes on a grill at medium/high heat.

Can I Prep Foil Wrapped Corn Ahead?

Cooking corn on the cob in foil is also a great way to cook corn when camping. You can pre-wrap your ears before leaving home and they are ready to toss into the campfire when you get to your campsite! I do recommend double-wrapping the corn in two layers of foil if you plan to cook it in a campfire.

How to Season your Corn on the Cob?

You can serve the corn plain without butter (if you’re counting calories) and enjoy your juicy cob right out of the foil, but perfectly seasoned corn on the cob screams summertime. The lemon dill butter is a tasty addition to foil-grilled corn and makes this grilled corn mouth-wateringly delicious.

How to Make Lemon Dill Butter:

  1. Cream the butter with a fork in a bowl.
  2. Stir in the pepper, salt, and lemon juice until smooth. The lemon juice will take a few minutes of stirring to mix well – just keep stirring!
  3. Mix in the freshly chopped dill and keep the butter room temperature until you serve the corn.

How to Grill Corn in Foil:

  1. Preheat Grill to Med/High. Shuck corn to remove husks. Leave the corn whole or break corn into the desired size. Wrap each ear of corn with a generous sheet of aluminum foil, making sure all sides are covered. If using regular kitchen-standard foil, wrap in a double layer of foil so your corn doesn’t get scorched.
  2. Grill foil-wrapped corn with the lid closed over medium/high heat, rotating the corn every 2 -3 minutes to keep from scorching. Grill for 15-20 minutes. Ours was done at 18 minutes.
  3. Once the corn is finished grilling, remove foil, and brush generously with Lemon Dill Butter while warm. Serve immediately (you won’t want to wait!).

Pro Tip: I don’t add any butter or oil to the cob inside the foil. The corn is naturally juicy and the foil seals in the moisture. You also don’t have to worry about oil leaking out of the corn and causing fiery flare-ups on the grill.

Grilled Corn in Foil on a blue platter
Grilled corn on the cob in foil makes the perfect addition to your summertime barbeque. Corn grilled in foil is easy, juicy and irresistible with our lemon dill butter!
Prep Time: 7 minutes
Cook Time: 18 minutes
Total Time: 25 minutes

Ingredients

Servings: 6

For the Grilled Corn:

  • 6 ears of corn

For the Lemon Dill Butter:

  • 4 Tbsp (1/2 stick) unsalted butter,, softened at room temp
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • Pinch of pepper, or to taste
  • 1 Tbsp fresh dill, finely chopped
  • 1 Tbsp fresh lemon juice

Instructions

How to Make Lemon Dill Butter:

  • Cream 4 Tbsp butter with a fork in a medium bowl.
  • Stir in 1/4 tsp salt, pinch of pepper and 1 Tbsp fresh lemon juice and mix until smooth. The lemon juice will seem like it isn't blending, but keep mixing for a couple minutes and it will happen.
  • Stir in fresh chopped dill until well incorporated. Keep the prepared butter at room temp until ready to serve corn.

How to Grill Corn:

  • Preheat Grill to Med/High. Shuck corn. Leave the corn whole or break corn into halves or thirds if serving a large crowd. Wrap each ear of corn with a generous sheet of heavy duty foil making sure all sides are covered. If using regular kitchen-standard foil, double wrap the corn so it doesn't scorch.
  • Grill foil-wrapped corn with the lid closed over medium/high heat, rotating the corn every 2 -3 minutes to keep from scorching. Grill for 15-20 minutes. Ours was done at 18 minutes. Once corn is finished grilling, remove foil and brush generously with lemon dill butter while warm.

Notes

Do not add butter or oil to the cob inside the foil. It is not necessary and can cause flare-ups on the grill.

For years and to me, I like to first season the corn (butter, salt, pepper, or maybe your lemon pepper), then wrap with enough rolls of aluminum foil to securely close the side and ends. After cooking on the grill as per your instructions, keep the foil on until ready to eat. The corn juices and seasonings really work well together, there are no leaks onto the grill, and the corn stays hot til ready to eat.

I really love lemon dill butter on corn-on-the cob! Thanks for this recipe.

Have you ever tried this method for roasting corn? Leave the corn in its husks, loosen the husks a bit and remove some of the silk. Completely submerge the ears in their husks in a container of water for at least an hour to allow husks to absorb moisture. Build a wood fire and reduce to hot coals or use charcoal. Bury the corn almost completely in the coals and allow the steam to cook the corn. The husks will be charred. Peel the husks down and remove the remaining silk. It should come off easily. Butter the corn and enjoy. No clean-up and no waste!

Hi Natasha – I was wondering if it would be okay to use dried dill instead of fresh? If so, do I need to adjust the amount? Thanks!

What a good method! I always end up boiling it which just seems like such a waste of nutrients. And that butter! I’ll run an extra hour on the treadmill for that!!!
