Easy Caramelized roasted sweet potato halves are the easiest and tastiest way to bake sweet potatoes, since there's no need to peel or chop. The halves are roasted in a deliciously seasoned butter until a caramelized crust forms. Serve these for any fall weeknight meal or even as a stand-out side dish at Thanksgiving.
Ingredients
2lbssweet potatoes, (about 2 large, 3 medium, or 5 small), scrubbed and cut in half lengthwise
5Tbspunsalted butter, or 4 Tbsp olive oil for dairy-free*
Melt the butter - Preheat the oven to 400°F with a rack in the center. Add the butter to a 13x18-inch rimmed sheet pan and place it in the oven until melted and just beginning to foam, about 5 minutes. Carefully remove the hot pan from the oven. Stir the chili powder, cumin, cinnamon, garlic powder, salt, and pepper directly into the melted butter until combined.
Arrange the sweet potatoes cut-side down in the seasoned butter, leaving a little space between each one. Press the cut side into the seasonings and butter, giving it a little twist, then brush some of the melted seasoned butter over the skins.
Roast for 30-40 minutes* depending on size, or until the potatoes are fork-tender and the cut sides are deeply caramelized.
Serve - Carefully flip the potatoes over and spoon any buttery caramelized drippings from the pan over the top before serving. Try dipping them into the sauce for our Smashed Sweet Potatoes Recipe.
Notes
*Olive Oil Substitution: If using olive oil on the sheet pan, skip the 5-minute melting step and simply add the oil to the pan with the seasonings.*Roasting Times: Smaller potatoes take 30 to 35 minutes, medium potatoes take 35-40 minutes, and larger potatoes can take 40 to 45 minutes. Make Ahead and Storage: Allow the potatoes to cool and store them within 2 hours in the fridge or freezer.
To refrigerate - store in an airtight container for 3-4 days
To freeze - store in a freezer-safe container for 3-4 months. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator, or reheat from frozen.
To reheat - reheat refrigerated sweet potatoes cut-side-down in a 350˚F oven or air fryer, or in a skillet over medium-low heat until hot. If reheating from frozen, use the oven or air fryer and allow extra time.
