This has become our go-to flank steak recipe! The marinade is so easy and has just a few ingredients which give the flank steak incredible flavor. Pair this with homemade Chimichurri Sauce for an unforgettable steak dinner.
The Tabasco Chipotle sauce is the SECRET INGREDIENT here and really amps up the natural flavors of the steak, adding rich and smoky flavor to every bite. Big thank you to Tabasco for sponsoring this recipe!
Watch How to Make Chipotle Flank Steak:
The marinade we came up with is so simple and flavorful! This flank steak is delicious paired with cilantro lime rice, scrumptious in tacos, and brilliant for fajitas! Squeeze some fresh lime juice over the top and serve. Is your mouth watering yet?
We used a generous amount of the Tabasco Chipotle Sauce. It adds more smoky rich flavor and the heat is so subtle after grilling that even our kids approved! I also served the steak with a splash of fresh lime juice and more of the Tabasco Chipotle Sauce (which I loved even more than my favorite steak sauce!).

Chipotle Flank Steak Recipe

Ingredients
- 2 lb flank steak
- 4 Tbsp Tabasco Chipotle Sauce, plus more to serve
- 1/3 bunch cilantro, about 1/2 cup loosely packed
- 1/3 cup green onion, chopped
- 1/3 cup olive oil
- 1/2 tsp black pepper
- 1 Lime, cut into wedges to serve
Instructions
- In the bowl of a blender or food processor, pulse together marinade ingredients: 1/2 cup cilantro, 1/4 cup chopped green onion, 1/3 cup olive oil, 4 Tbsp Tabasco Chipotle Sauce, 1/2 tsp black pepper. Blend until smooth.
- Place steak in a non-reactive dish (glass or plastic) and cover all sides with marinade. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate 6 hours or preferably overnight. Remove from refrigerator 30 minutes prior to grilling.
- Grill over Medium-high heat (450˚F) for 4 min per side for medium rare, or cook to desired doneness. To create the fancy grilling marks, rotate 45˚ after 2 minutes. Remove to a plate and let rest 10 to 15 minutes prior to cutting. Cut steak (against the grain) into thin strips and serve.

This recipe is one of many I’ve made from your site! From the mango cake, the grape jelly meatballs, the meatloaf, to the general tso’s chicken, they never disappoint!
I just tweaked it a little by salting the steak and setting aside some sauce for dipping. It was delicious! Thank you for being my go-to for great delicious recipes!
That’s wonderful! Thank you for sharing some of your favorites, Abbey! So glad you enjoyed this recipe. 🙂
Hi there,
Can you cook this meat in a pan rather than grilling?
Thank you for your response.
Hi Lisa, you could do it on a pan, preferably a heavy-bottomed pan for even heat distribution. Sear the steak over higher heat then reduce heat to medium and cook to desired doneness.
I’m one of the unfortunate 20% of the population for whom Cilantro hits the tastes buds like soap, so I subbed parsley and it turned out fabulous. I have also made in my cast iron skillet when the weather doesn’t allow me to grill, and both ways are fantastic. Thanks for another great recipe.
I’m so happy that worked with parsley, Rhonda! Thank you so much for sharing that with me.
I don’t have a grill and am wondering if I could cook this flank steak in my Vortex air fryer/oven. The recipe sounds delicious. I fear if I cooked on stove top it would get too smoky in the house.
Hi Christine, steak in the air fryer works well because it doesn’t get smoky. It depends on the thickness of the steak and the desired doneness, but you could try air fry at 400˚F for 8-10 minutes, flipping halfway.
This was so delicious……my family loved it-yummy! I cooked it on a charcoal grill, and had to adjust the cooking time(is the only difference)
That’s so great! Thank you for sharing that wonderful review, Patricia!
Made this today for Father’s Day. It was fantastic! The marinade was super spicy so I was worried it would be too hot, but it actually cooks up with great flavor and isn’t spicy when it’s done. My whole family loved it and we are definitely going to make it again. Thanks for the wonderful recipe!
Thanks for sharing that with us, Angela! So wonderful to hear your good feedback, we appreciate it!
I am looking for the cilantro lime rice that you said that the recipe is listed below and it is not there!
Could u please share it?
Thank you
Hi Mariam, we are working on developing one and will post once it’s perfected.
Hoping your cilantro lime recipe will be in your cookbook. Can’t wait for October
I love all your recipes! Where can I purchase your cookbook?
Hi Joan, we do not have a cookbook at this time but stay tuned! We have one in the planning stages.
cool
can’t wait=0)
Thank you am first time Mom and I can’t thank you enough! would like to have the recipe for the Cilantro Lime Rice please!
Hi Naomi. I don’t have a recipe for Cilantro Line Rice but hopefully, I can try this out soon!
Hi Natasha, any recommendations for a cilantro substitute. It tastes like soap to me.
Hi Nins, parsley or dill would work also.
Do you have or know any recipes with skirt steak? I accidently bought that instead of flank..
Hi Donna, I don’t have anything for skirt steak. You can look over our index by ingredients here. I think it’s worth experimenting in any recipe I have that calls for flank steak.
Simple, easy….. would love to see secondary directions for cooking in the kitchen, rather then grilling on all recipes. Plan to broil and hope it turns out….
Hi Nancy, thank you for the suggestion.
Very delicious recipe and so easy to follow! Love the videos!!
Thank you for that great compliment, Natalie!
Of all the cooking shows, recipe searches etc. I particularly like your “Natasha’s Kitchen” most. You take food to a higher level without being overly complicated. The recipes and tutorials are easy to follow for the novice or for the more advanced cooks. Thank you!
Wow! Thank you, Darrell! I’m so inspired reading your review.
Hello Natasha I was wondering if the original Tabasco would work? Don’t have the chipotle one on hand.
Hi Mary, original Tabasco sauce is quite a bit more vinegary and salty so I think you could substitute but not straight across. I haven’t tested this particular recipe with original Tabasco but I would probably start with 1 Tbsp of original Tabasco sauce.
Hi Natasha, made the steak last night. Had really great flavor. Will definitely make it again. Thanks for the recipe.
You’re welcome Sveta! Thanks for the great review! 🙂
Thanks for posting this recipe, I really like the idea of using burrata, it’s not used enough!
hello what if you didn’t have a grill which I do how else could you cook this the flank steak with the chipotle
Hi laura, you could do it on a pan, preferably a heavy-bottomed pan for even heat distribution. Sear the steak over higher heat then reduce heat to medium and cook to desired doneness.
checking out this recipe–i just about cant get past the photos-mouth watering / eye appeal / sharp focus. if i had everything in the pantry to try this i would be in the kitchen, at this early hour, trying this now, but i will have to go to the groc. first.thanks for the recipe.
Thank you for those awesome compliments! I hope you LOVE the steak! 🙂
Hi Natasha,
I can’t eat anything too spicy. How hot is the Tabasco Chipotle? I was also wondering if brown rice cane be used? Thanks for all your wonderful r copies, video’s and suggestions.
Nancy🇨🇦
Hi Nancy, the Tabasco Chipotle is not very hot at all in terms of being a hot sauce. Once it’s grilled with the steak, it’s very subtle and even kid friendly. My son doesn’t go near anything spicy and he ate up his portion without any complaints :). You can serve it with brown rice, absolutely! 🙂
Hello Natasha, Do you think this recipe will work well with chicken instead?
Thank you for the recipes, they’re great.
Ella
Hi Ella, yes, I tested it with chicken and it works really well! Keep in mind you will have to grill at a lower temperature (350-375˚F) and grill until fully cooked through.
There is no salt, should I add some?
Hi Elvira, no salt is required. The Tabasco sauce has enough salt in it 🙂 I’ve tested it with and without and the added salt is completely unnecessary 🙂
That big hunk of steak looks so delish! That could easily feed an army! I wish we have that on our dinner table tonight…Great job!
Thank you Sheila, it got devoured quickly 😋.
Great job Natasha! That flank steak looks fantastic. So glad we both got to collab on the Tabasco 10 challenge 🙂
It was a really fun challenge to participate in! I’m excited to see the recipe you came up with! 🙂
Can I bake it or use a cast iron?
Hi Alley, a cast iron would work fine! Sear over med/high heat and continue cooking until desired doneness is reached. You might need to turn down the heat after initial searing so you don’t burn your steak before it’s done. Ideally you shouldn’t cover it in a pan or it will get steamy which will result in a dry steak.
Wow well done Natasha gurl really way cool vid and omg yo my mouth is watering totally craving a nice hearty juicy steak right now lmao gotta try that hot sauce brand hopefully it’s kosher lol totally screams bbq woot woot
Hi Tzivia! I’m not sure if it’s kosher or not. They may have more information on that on their website. But I’m glad the photos and video made you hungry 😉 Thank you!
Hiya Natasha happy dappy Sunday gurl I can totally check out that hot sauce brand further anytime you totally need a tv cooking show have not had a good hearty steak in awhile now or frites they go really awesomely well together
Yum, fajitas sound really good about now at 8:30 am, lol. I love the Chipotle sauce on beef. And the Jalapeno sauce goes perfectly on fish tacos. Dang now I’m hungry.
OoohI haven’t tried their jalapeno sauce on fish tacos but that sounds amazing!! Thanks for sharing that tip!
Your pictures are giving me serious cravings!! Yum!
Thank you for that awesome compliment! 🙂
I’m a big fan of Tabasco but I have not explored their other flavors. I’ll definitely be making this!!
The Chipotle one is definitely worth trying and works so well in this marinade! We also loved it served with the finished product instead of barbecue sauce. It’s a lot more mild than I thought it would be when I first tried it but it does have really good smoky flavor!
