Chocolate Leaf How-To

A piece of cake on a white plate garnished with chocolate leaves

You may have noticed these lovelies on the Kiev Cake Recipe post. My cousin, Alla gave me the awesome idea for a chocolate leaf. It’s an easy way to fancy-up a cake. All you need is some leaves and semi-sweet chocolate. I tried doing this with leaves from a rose-bush and the leaves stuck onto the chocolate. I found that using fake plant leaves work even better. Try to leave a bit of stem on the leaf so you can handle it easier as you dip into the chocolate.

How To Make Chocolate Leaf, Leaves:

1. Melt about 1/2 cup chocolate in a microwaveable bowl (follow package instructions on melting).

2. Dip one side of the leaves generously into the chocolate.

3. Place leaf, chocolate side up, on a plate and refrigerate until chocolate hardens.

4. After chocolate hardens, slowly peel off the leaves (thanks Julia!)

I plan on making a cake with chocolate leaves. When should i put the leaves on the cake? Would leaves melt if the cake stands at room temperature? I want to make it for mothers day and will be taking the cake to moms house and just want to know if the leaves wont melt on the cake in the car..

The leaves should not melt unless they are in a very warm room or in the sun. How long will it be in the car? It works well at room temp for several hours.

Is milk chocolate okay to use?

Milk chocolate is fine, but preferred one is semisweet. Also if you ever in Costco, buy chocolate truffles and melt them.

Ok, I figured, but it wasn’t listed in the steps. I used to like eating plastic but my sharpest teeth have fallen out.

So do you peel the fake leaf off when it dries or leave it in the chocolate?

Ok, I probably should have written that part in. Well, unless you like eating plastic, I’d probably take them off 🙂
