Ground Beef Stroganoff is a delicious little spin on a classic. In under 30 minutes, you will have a rich and creamy mushroom sauce that is PACKED with savory, ground beef. Yum!
During these colder months, there is nothing more soothing than a hearty meal of beef in a cream sauce. We love Classic Beef Stroganoff and this ground beef version is even easier.

I love simple dishes that don’t use too many ingredients. That being said, I don’t like to skimp on flavor either! My Ground Beef Stroganoff is the perfect example of a dish that’s both low-maintenance and tasty. I’m so excited to bring it into your home!
I love to cook, but I don’t love cleaning up big messes. Therefore, I am a huge fan of one-pot meals. It’s also really easy to double or triple the recipe since it’s cooked in one pot. Meal-preppers rejoice!
Best Ground Beef for Stroganoff
Since the base of your sauce is cream, you are going to want to use leaner ground beef so you don’t have too much fat. I recommend using 90% lean beef. If you must, you can ground beef with a higher fat content but it will release more fat.
Tip: If your ground beef has a higher fat content, brown it first and strain out the liquid fat that cooks off before you combine it with your sauce.
What is Stroganoff?
Beef Stroganoff has graced the tables of many over the centuries. But, who can take credit for this lusciously creamy, beefy dish? Authentic Beef Stroganoff was dreamt up in Russia in the early 1800s by the personal chef of Count Stroganoff, a dignitary in the court of Alexander III at the time. The chef then named his creation after the Count and the rest is history.
How to Make Ground Beef Stroganoff
- Brown your ground beef in a dutch oven or deep skillet with olive oil.
- To the ground beef add chopped onions and minced garlic. Cook until lightly browned.
- Add mushrooms to the skillet and cook for another 5 minutes.
- Add flour, stir to combine everything together and saute for another minute.
- Pour in your broth and scrape any bits stuck to the bottom of the pan. Add in your heavy whipping cream, Worcestershire sauce, salt, pepper and bring to a simmer.
- Remove from heat. While stirring constantly, add in sour cream slowly.
How to Serve Ground Beef Stroganoff
Ground Beef Stroganoff is just as versatile as the classic version. You can serve it with noodles, rice, buckwheat or my favorite, mashed potatoes. You could even slather the meat sauce over some roasted potatoes.
If you want to skip the carbs, pour your beef stroganoff on top of some roasted veggies. My roasted Brussels sprouts will do the trick.
For a garnish, chop up some fresh parsley or dill and sprinkle it right on top. Herbs add a nice pop of color, but more importantly, a welcome contrast to the beefy flavor.
Storing Leftover Beef Stroganoff
Refrigerate your leftovers by storing them in an airtight container for up to a week. You can reheat in a saucepan over medium heat or in the microwave.
Freeze stroganoff in an airtight container or a freezer-safe bag. Allow it to thaw overnight before serving. Reheat in the microwave or in a saucepan over medium heat.
Cook’s Tip: If you serve your stroganoff with noodles, make sure to store the pasta separately from the sauce. Noodles have a tendency to absorb liquid and will suck up your sauce overnight!

Ground Beef Stroganoff

Ingredients
- 1 Tbsp olive oil
- 1 lb lean ground beef
- 1/2 medium onion, diced
- 1 lb mushrooms, sliced
- 2 garlic cloves, minced
- 2 Tbsp all-purpose flour
- 1 cup beef broth
- 1 cup heavy whipping cream
- 1/3 cup sour cream
- 1 Tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1/2 tsp salt, adjust to taste
- 1/2 tsp ground black pepper, adjust to taste
Instructions
- Preheat a heavy, deep pan over medium-high heat with olive oil. Add ground beef and stir to break down beef into tiny pieces. Add onions and minced garlic. Saute until the onion is translucent and golden brown.

- Add 1 cup beef broth, 1 cup whipping cream, 1 Tbsp Worcestershire sauce, 1/2 tsp salt, and 1/2 tsp black pepper and bring it to a simmer. Turn the heat to low and simmer for about 5 minutes.
- Remove from the heat and add in sour cream. Stir to combine everything together and season to taste if needed. Serve over noodles, rice or potatoes.

I agree that it doesn’t have any flavor. I added a lot of garlic and onion powders, paprika and turmeric as well as extra worcestershire sauce. It was still meh. If I make it again I will add a bouillon cube.
Best beef stroganoff recipe! It reminds me of what my mother would always make me. In the country I am in sour cream is hard to find, so I found that 100% sugar free greek yogurt is an amazing sour cream replacer. It adds the right flavor and creaminess, personally I think it is better than the sour cream even.
Great idea, Drake! I’m so glad you found a good substitute!
I made this tonight and it was wonderful. Unfortunately I didn’t have any mushrooms but next time I will. I use the jar sliced mushrooms.
I made this using dairy free heavy cream, dairy free sour cream, and gluten free pasta. I also added about 1/4tsp of paprika and topped with parsley. It tastes amazing! Thank you for sharing this. 😊
First time cooking something in my life but it’s hard to go wrong with this I guess, so It was pretty good. I used beef bouillon cube in water instead of broth and it turned out fine.
What kind of whipping cream do you use? Here in US , we have half and half or heavy cream
Hi Padme. I used the carton labeled “whipping cream.” It’s higher in fat than half and half, but not quite as much fat content as the one labeled “heavy whipping cream.” Heavy whipping cream would work too. The fat content is what helps the sauce thicken. If you’re using a lighter cream like half and half, the sauce will be more runny.
thank you. Do you happen to have a video of this recipe with the ground beef instead of the traditional?
You’re welcome, Padme. This recipe does not have a video.
made this last night, recipe exactly as written, it was FANTASTIC! Personally, I am not even a big fan of mushrooms , and even I went back for a 2nd bowl. Put on top of white rice, delicious!
I’m so happy you enjoyed that. Thank you for sharing that with us, Padme!
I have been craving SOS or beef stroganoff so I thought I would try this recipe. Like some of the other reviewers, I thought it needed more seasoning. I added 4 cloves of garlic, a whole onion, extra beef Better Than Bullion, oregano, lots of pepper but it was still missing something so I added a package of dry onion soup mix. That did the trick! Served it with egg noodles. Yummy!
Thank you for sharing!
Made this evening. Doubled recipe, used chicken instead of beef stock and whole milk instead of cream. Didn’t have mushrooms so did without. Came out delicious! Served over pasta or riced cauliflower. Quick, easy & delicious – a real winner!
Thanks a lot for sharing and great to hear that it turned out super good!
I usually hate it when people say I made this BUT, I changed half the recipe lol. I cooked it almost exactly as is but,(lol) I don’t really care for worcestershire sauce too much, so I used about half of the worcestershire it called for and substituted the other half for dijon mustard and swapped flour for corn starch. It came out incredible! I heavily seasoned my ground beef with black garlic and truffle seasoning, herbs de Provence, paprika(because of other reviews), and season all. I used sliced fresh baby Bella mushrooms, Vidalia onion half of it diced and the rest finely sliced, and beef better than bouillon for the broth. I ate mine over basmati rice with lime zest and my family had theirs over pasta. I will definitely be using this recipe from now on. Thank you for sharing.
I was looking for something a little faster than the other recipe I have for beef stroganoff. I doubled the recipe because my boys play sports and eat a lot. I did make 2 little changes. I used round steak cut thin into 2 inch strips. And I used about a quarter cup of white wine. Other than that I followed it as written. Delicious!! I think I’m going to replace this recipe with my other one. Thank you for a great recipe.
You’re very welcome, Ken!
Came out delicious
7th or 8th time I’ve used this recipe! Never disappointed! This ground beef stroganoff is one of my wife’s favorites. If I made it twice a week she would be ecstatic. Quick and easy! Plus it’s delicious.
Delicious and simple. I was looking for a dinner recipe using ground beef. The ingredients came together easily, no problems, and it was quick to make. I liked the combination; I had all the ingredients on hand so that’s a win too! This recipe deserves 5 stars.
Thank you so much for this recipe! Making it ahead and freezing so I have plenty of food stocked up for post-partum. Life saver! 💖
I love this recipe! I did have to modify one thing and that was the flour (I’m gluten sensitive) I swapped it with corn starch. Kids had it over noodles, hubby and I had it over riced cauliflower with an extra dollop of sour cream on top. Delicious!
That’s great, Natalie! Thank you for sharing that with us.
This was the best ground beef stroganoff recipe I ever made ! Only changes I made were adding a little paprika and tumerick and a little more pink Himalayan sea salt.
I was looking for that paprika! Not sure why my comment has to be 50 characters, but there ya go!
Delicious and super easy to make. I used fresh garlic and seasoning mix of garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Served over buttered noodles. Yummy and easy to make for a quick meal. Thanks for sharing.
Family loved it. Sooo much better than Hamburger Helper. Yes I admitted my culinary sins and I have repented. Wasn’t sure if I could pull it off but the recipe is foolproof.
Who knew homemade stroganoff could be so easy!?! Say goodbye to Hamburger Helper, because this recipe is easy and legit! Thank you for your recipes and videos, this recipe was my first of many, and now a family week night favorite. Keep them coming, because of you I have became a better cook!
I’m so glad to hear that, Lisa! Thank you!
I’ve made this multiple times now and it turns out amazing every time. I like to dice up the mushrooms fine but follow the recipe exactly. Me and my husband love it.
Great to hear that, Kate! Thanks a lot for this great feedback.
Delicious!! Made as per recipe with the following additions/mods. Used 1/2 tsp each of paprika and dry mustard. 1 tsp dried thyme. Upped the Worcestershire to 2 Tbsp and added 1/4 cup of fresh Italian parsley at the end.. Folded the egg noodles into the mix before serving
Thank you for sharing your experience, Mike!
