Strawberries Romanoff is a no-bake, easy and luscious summer dessert. It is the adult version of Strawberries and Cream (one of my favorite recipes since childhood). This dessert feels and tastes fancy but it’s refreshingly simple to make and it is perfect for summer parties!
The whipped cream topping is easy and just works; a simple sweetened whipped cream with sour cream folded into it, which gives it amazing flavor and creaminess. The sour cream keeps the whipped cream fairly stable. I’ve seen (and tested) some variations out there using ice cream, but it quickly melts into a big soupy mess and doesn’t work. Also, don’t add any extra flavoring to the cream – keep it simple. There, now I’ve told you so you won’t be tempted to try it also ;).
WARNING: The next photo will make you crave this strawberry dessert!
Ingredients for Strawberries Romanoff:
*Grand Marnier is an orange flavored liqueur that can be purchased at most liquor stores. If you don’t need it for any other recipe, by all means buy the $4 tiny bottle that is just the right size for this recipe; 1 oz. The bigger bottles can be pretty spendy so I buy the tiny bottles for when I need them, like for this berry tiramisu recipe!
How to Make Strawberries Romanoff Recipe:
1. In a medium bowl, combine hulled and quartered strawberries, 4 Tbsp sugar and 4 Tbsp liqueur, stir to combine then cover and refrigerate at least 1 hour and up to 2 hours, stirring once or twice.
2. Just before serving, in a large mixing bowl, combine 1 cup cold heavy cream and 1/4 cup powdered sugar, and beat with an electric mixer until stiff peaks form. Using a spatula, fold in 1/4 cup sour cream just until well blended.
3. To serve, stir strawberries then divide between 6 serving glasses or bowls. You can spoon a little syrup over the berries if you like. You can also use this syrup to soak a cake – so good!! Spoon cream over strawberries, dividing evenly. You can also use an ice cream scoop with trigger release for a nice rounded puff of cream. Serve right away or chill and enjoy within 2 hours of assembly.

There is some debate as to where this recipe originated. I have read this is a French recipe, named after the Russian royal family. If you know more history on this recipe, let me know in a comment below!
I hope you all enjoy this fresh, beautiful and simple Strawberries Romanoff Recipe.
Can’t wait to make this for a family dinner. I don’t want to use products with alcohol, so what can you suggest as a substitute? Thanks for so many wonderful recipes!
Hi Frannie! If you wanted to make it alcohol-free, you could macerate the cherries with the sugar. You could also add a splash of orange juice if desired.
Had strawberries Romanov prepared table side and warmed with brandy, set a flame, took only minutes,a great show!
That sounds awesome! Thank you so much for sharing that with me.
Delicious! The recipe says 8 dessert cups servings, but then your last step says to put in 6 dessert cups. I’m sure it depends on size, but just curious if the picture was about the size you used. Also, is there a way or not that this can be made ahead of time? Sometimes I want to take it somewhere — when people cannot come to my house!
Hi Barbara, you can divide it into 8 or 6, depending on your size. I just recommend evenly distributing the ingredients. I hope that helps.
Is this recipe similar to La Madeline’s Strawberries Romanoff? Thanks
Hi Ana, I’m not sure what the ingredients are for their recipe but I think they are similar.
I am looking for a great desert and this seems like a good fit. I like the idea but how sweet is it? Is there a way to make it more tangy? Thank you in advance.
Hi Tatyana! It depends on the strawberries, if they are sweet, you can use less sugar, but if your strawberries are more tart, then you can use the full amount of sugar. I don’t think this dessert is too sweet. Plus, the addition of sour cream adds a nice tangy flavor.
Hey there, I love your recipe easy to follow and yummy! This is quite delicious . really enjoyed. Dear, I think you should know it’s really nice when served chilled.
Thanks for your good comments and feedback!
Looks awesome, my husband is lactose intolerant so dream whip works really good also
Thank you so much for sharing that with us, Lou!
We were given this recipe by the owners of a German/Italian/American restaurant in historic Highlands North Carolina in the early 90’s. Long since lost and forgotten. So excited to stumble upon this recipe as my favorite desert at Herman and Hildegard
Strausses restaurant where they fed our teams of golfers.
Delicious and just as I remembered. Thanks for the recipe and memories! ( I see the restaurant is now Wolfgangs and has been featured in Southern Living)
Hi Deborah! So glad you came across this recipe. I hope you enjoy it.
I would like to make a strawberry romanoff cake. Can you suggest a cake I can make with it?
Thank you!
Hi Pat, You can also use this syrup to soak a cake – so good to make a romanoff style cake! I hope you love it!
Hi Natasha! Love your recipes and love how simple you keep them! What can I substitute to make it with NO alcohol?
Hi Sarah, if you wanted to make it alcohol-free, you could macerate the cherries with the sugar. You could also add a splash of orange juice if desired.
Hi Natasha,
Can I change the strawberry with other fruit? Like peach, blueberry, mix Berry?
Thanks
Hi Aisya, I bet it could! If you experiment, I’d love to know how you like that!
The recipe calls for 4 Tbsp grand marnier* orange liqueur divided…
then it all goes in with the strawberries.
Was a portion intended for the topping? 🤔
Hi Jon, I think the word divided is a misprint. It should not be in there. Sorry about that. I removed it.
One Tbs is one ounce. So, which is the correct amount of Grand Marinier for the recipe? One Tbs or 4 Tbs?
Thanks.
Hi Jacqueline, 4 Tbsp of Grand Marnier is correct.
I think 1 tbsp is 15 cc which is equivalent of 1/2 oz. One ounce would be two tbsp.
Not true! One-eighth (1/8) cup – 1oz (8oz=1c). It is 2T per oz!!
Also, 1 Tbsp= 15ml or appr. 2teaspons
2 Tablespoons=30ml or appr. 1oz.
Clarification: my response was correcting Jon. Phyllis is correct!
