Strawberries Romanoff is a no-bake, easy and luscious summer dessert. It is the adult version of Strawberries and Cream (one of my favorite recipes since childhood). This dessert feels and tastes fancy but it’s refreshingly simple to make and it is perfect for summer parties!
The whipped cream topping is easy and just works; a simple sweetened whipped cream with sour cream folded into it, which gives it amazing flavor and creaminess. The sour cream keeps the whipped cream fairly stable. I’ve seen (and tested) some variations out there using ice cream, but it quickly melts into a big soupy mess and doesn’t work. Also, don’t add any extra flavoring to the cream – keep it simple. There, now I’ve told you so you won’t be tempted to try it also ;).
WARNING: The next photo will make you crave this strawberry dessert!
Ingredients for Strawberries Romanoff:
*Grand Marnier is an orange flavored liqueur that can be purchased at most liquor stores. If you don’t need it for any other recipe, by all means buy the $4 tiny bottle that is just the right size for this recipe; 1 oz. The bigger bottles can be pretty spendy so I buy the tiny bottles for when I need them, like for this berry tiramisu recipe!
How to Make Strawberries Romanoff Recipe:
1. In a medium bowl, combine hulled and quartered strawberries, 4 Tbsp sugar and 4 Tbsp liqueur, stir to combine then cover and refrigerate at least 1 hour and up to 2 hours, stirring once or twice.
2. Just before serving, in a large mixing bowl, combine 1 cup cold heavy cream and 1/4 cup powdered sugar, and beat with an electric mixer until stiff peaks form. Using a spatula, fold in 1/4 cup sour cream just until well blended.
3. To serve, stir strawberries then divide between 6 serving glasses or bowls. You can spoon a little syrup over the berries if you like. You can also use this syrup to soak a cake – so good!! Spoon cream over strawberries, dividing evenly. You can also use an ice cream scoop with trigger release for a nice rounded puff of cream. Serve right away or chill and enjoy within 2 hours of assembly.

There is some debate as to where this recipe originated. I have read this is a French recipe, named after the Russian royal family. If you know more history on this recipe, let me know in a comment below!
I hope you all enjoy this fresh, beautiful and simple Strawberries Romanoff Recipe.
I love this recipe! I like to serve it in stemmed crystal goblets and my guests always mention how elegant it looks and the taste is amazing. I’ve used this recipe for about 30 years.
Thanks, Natasha for sharing it with the new generations!
You’re so welcome Pamela! Sounds great, thanks for sharing that with us.
I add the juice and zest of 1 orange to the strawberries. This is awesome over a yellow cake (no icing) because the cake soaks up the juices nicely.
I’m so glad you enjoyed it, thank you so much for sharing that with me.
Easy recipe to follow and execute. Served this as a side dish for a girls’ brunch. Huge hit all around. I will use the whipped topping recipe with other dishes.
I’m so happy to hear that! Thank you for sharing your great review, Donalie!
Hi Natasha, I haven’t tried making this yet but plan to tonight! Can the cream be made in advance and refrigerated overnight? or it won’t keep its consistency? Thanks
Hi Mila, I apologize I missed your comment earlier. It will hold up refrigerated overnight but you will want to beat until stiff peaks form for it to refrigerate well, then cover and refrigerate until ready to serve.
Hi!
You asked history of this recipe?
don’t know if anyone has replayed, but here is short story of it:
Antonin Marie Careme was chef in Romanoff’s court, and same time french cognac houses got new ingredient to use, oranges, so they made liquor of those oranges. And Anton Careme created this dessert, and named it after his employed…
Wow! Thank you so much for sharing that with me!
We had this 39 yrs ago. The chef called it Strawberries Romanov. Thanks for bringing back fond memories of young love.
Awww that’s the best! Thank you so much for sharing that with me :). I’m all smiles!
This looks delicious! Do you think I would be able to have good results substituting the sugars with powdered stevia?
Hi Olga, I honestly haven’t tested that so I’m not sure how that would taste, but it’s worth an experiment if you are avoiding sugar.
Maybe someone else has tried? Please let us know and thanks in advance! 🙂
I need to experiment more! Still love strawberries and cream. I think this would be worth the effort though:)
This recipe is so simple and so delicious, you’ll love it!
Hi Natasha, love your recipes. Can I use a different flavor liquor? Like hazelnut? Or it has to be orange?
Thank you
Hi Natasha, orange pairs well with strawberries so if you think it will pair well, it may work as a substitute. Orange is also the traditional one used for strawberries romanoff. Be careful not to add too many different flavors though. For example, I’ve tried adding vanilla in addition to the liquor and it was just too much. Let me know if you try the hazelnut! 🙂
seems this was an absolutely delicious. Thank you very much for sharing this with us.
My pleasure Amy! I’m glad you enjoy it!
Many different interesting desserts can be cooked when the season of berries comes. I love this time
Right!? Me too Erica 🙂

You’re welcome Lara! Please let me know what everyone thinks of the recipe!
Ooh I just bought some strawberries yesterday, looks like this is for dessert tonight!
Please let me know what you think of the recipe Britt!
What can you use instead of the Marnier?
Hi Katie, if you wanted to make it alcohol free, you could just macerate the cherries with the sugar. You could also add a splash of orange juice if desired.
This is the perfect grown-up summer treat! I love how light and airy this is, and the Grand Marnier is a nice touch.
Thank you so much Natasha! I agree 🙂 Please let me know what you think if you decide to make the recipe!
Hi Natasha, did you add some homegrown strawberries in your pictures? This looks like a good recipe!
Thank you Katya! The strawberries in the cups were storebought and only the surrounding ones used for decoration were homegrown. Most of our strawberries are too small for them to work well in the Strawberries Romanoff – they’d be teeny tiny if you tried to cut them in half 😉
Wow! The look is amazing. Can’t wait to make one of this. Off to the kitchen… Thanks, Natasha.
My pleasure! Please let me know what you think Andre!
This is quite yummy. really enjoyed my dessert. Natasha, I think you should know it’s really nice when served chilled.
