Salty Canadian Iced Latte Recipe

This viral coffee drink known as the “Salty Canadian” is so easy to make at home-no wonder it’s so popular!

The first time I saw this viral Salty Canadian iced latte being made, I knew I had to recreate it at home. It’s better than any iced coffee I’ve tried at a coffee shop, and you’ll love that it’s naturally sweetened with maple syrup (which you can adjust to taste) and it has simple and real ingredients.

My husband and I can’t stop making it in summer. Our only complaint is how quickly it disappears.

Ingredients for Salted Maple Iced Latte

  • Espresso – use a large shot of espresso, or if you don’t have an espresso machine, you can use instant espresso powder. If you don’t have espresso and prefer to use regular coffee, check out my Iced Coffee Recipe instead.
  • Maple syrup – naturally sweetened with maple syrup, so you can add as much as you’d like.
  • Butter – use salted or unsalted. Cold butter works especially well because it melts more slowly as you blend, helping the mixture emulsify and thicken and froth.
  • Salt – offsets the heaviness of the butter–so don’t skip this step!
  • Cold milk – cold milk keeps the ice from melting and making the drink watery (see below for dairy free substitutions)

For a Dairy-Free Iced Latte

Swap non-dairy butter and non-dairy milk (like barista-style oat milk or soy milk) to make this a dairy-free iced latte. Just be sure to use the stick-style dairy-free butter rather than the spreadable one, and check the salt before adding more.

How to Make an Iced Latte

Enjoy this homemade iced latte recipe that tastes as good as the coffee shop, but is made in just a few minutes in your own home.

  1. Fill a glass with ice and then pour the cold milk over the top.

Natasha’s Pro Tip for Serving

Enjoy this Salted Maple Iced Latte recipe just after mixing because the frothy butter will separate and the ice will melt and make the drink watered down as it sits, so make this delicious treat just before serving!

Try this, and you’ll agree it’s better than any iced coffee from a coffee shop, and it’s so refreshing and cooling in summer.

Iced Latte (Salty Canadian)

Prep Time: 5 minutes
Total Time: 5 minutes
This viral Salty Canadian, or Salted Maple Iced Latte, tastes like a comforting pancake breakfast in an iced drink. You'll love the foamy, velvety drink that you can perfectly sweeten to taste. Each recipe makes 1 coffee drink and is best served immediately.

Ingredients

Servings: 1 serving
  • 2 oz espresso, (a large shot of espresso)
  • tsp maple syrup, or to taste
  • tsp butter, preferably cold, salted or unsalted
  • Pinch of salt
  • 3 –4 oz cold milk
  • Ice, enough to fill the glass three-quarters full

Instructions

  • Fill a glass three-quarters full with ice. Pour the cold milk over the ice.
  • Mix Ingredients – Pour the espresso shot into a measuring cup or glass with enough room for frothing. Add the maple syrup, butter, and a pinch of salt.
  • Froth – Immediately blend with a handheld frother or immersion blender until the butter is fully incorporated and a thick foam forms.
  • Build the latte – Slowly pour the coffee mixture over the milk and ice. Stir to combine, and enjoy with or without a straw.

Notes

*If you do not have an espresso machine, you can use instant espresso powder, but not regular coffee, since it won’t be concentrated enough to make the latte. If you prefer to use regular coffee, see my Iced Coffee Recipe.
*To make this dairy-free, substitute the butter with dairy-free butter sticks (avoid the spreadable butter) and the milk with oat milk or soy milk. If using dairy-free butter, add salt to taste since dairy-free butter often contains more salt.
