We’ve been making these whole wheat blueberry waffles about twice a week for the past few months. We’re a little obsessed with our new waffle maker I guess.
This recipe is everything you want in a waffle; crisp on the outside and soft on the inside. It’s modified from the waffle recipe we found on allrecipes.com. We made the waffles healthy by substituting with whole wheat flour, sea salt, olive oil, honey and of course we added some blueberries. With all these “healthifications” (you’ll know by now I make up words when it seems appropriate), you’ll feel great about serving them to your family.
These waffles are really really good! We love them with real maple syrup and raspberry sauce and pile on all kinds of fresh fruit. Remember this recipe when you’re deciding what to make for breakfast on Father’s Day!
Ingredients for Whole Wheat Waffles:
2 large eggs
2 cups whole wheat flour
4 tsp baking powder
1/4 tsp fine sea salt or table salt
1 3/4 cups milk (any kind, we use 1%)
1/2 cup olive oil (we use extra light olive oil), canola oil also works well
1/2 tsp pure vanilla extract
1 Tbsp honey
1 cup fresh blueberries (or 1 cup frozen with 1 tsp whole wheat flour)

What you’ll need:
A Waffle maker. We happen to love ours so we recommend it 🙂
How to Make Whole Wheat Honey Waffles:
1. Preheat your waffle maker to medium heat. In a large bowl beat 2 eggs on high speed until frothy and bubbly (1 min)

2. Place your sifter over your beaten eggs and sift in your 2 cups flour, 4 tsp baking powder and 1/4 tsp salt. Add the bran that’s left behind in your sifter; this is the oober healthy part of these waffles.

3. Pour in 1 3/4 cups milk, 1/2 cup olive oil, 1/2 tsp vanilla and 1 Tbsp honey. Whisk the mixture together until smooth.

4. In a small bowl, Mix together 1 cup blueberries with 1 tsp whole wheat flour. The flour coating will keep the blueberries from getting juicy. Use a spatula to fold in the frozen blueberries. Try not to over-mix or you’ll start getting blue streaks in your batter.

5. Spray the preheated waffle iron to prevent sticking then pour your batter into your preheated waffle almost to the edges (you’ll know if you poured too much if you get batter that leaks out of the sides (put a paper towel underneath just in case). Serve waffles right away or let them rest on a wire rack. Don’t stack them while they are warm or they will become squishy and no one likes squishy waffles.
.

See that strange hole on the edge of the waffle? That’s how you know they are homemade. What do you love on your waffles?

Superb post.Ne’er knew this, thank youu forr letting me know.
You’re welcome! I’m glad you found it helpful!
What is the nutrition information on these waffles?
Due to time constraints, I don’t typically include nutritional info, but check out https://www.verywell.com – you can plug in the ingredients from any recipe, select the serving size and it will give you nutritional info, calories, etc. I hope that is helpful to you!
Has anyone tried subbing the olive oil for coconut oil with success?
Do you have more waffle recipies? I got a new waffle iron for Christmas and wanted to make some waffles. Merry Christmas!
These are the only one so far. We have plenty of pancakes recipes but only one waffles. I guess this means we should post more this new year! 😉
Made these waffles and loved them! Added about a tablespoon of ground flaxseed and they were perfect.
I love that healthy add-in! Thank you for sharing that with us 🙂
These are great! By adding a bit of Agave my kids eat them without syrup or butter. Made a double batch today to have in the freezer. This has been a wonderful addition to my efforts to get my kids off processed foods. They are reading ingredients now and love making healthy options to freeze for easy food options later. Thank You!!
That’s awesome that you’re teaching your kids healthy habits early on! I’m so glad you and your kids enjoyed this recipe 🙂
Will this recipe work as well.if I don’t have a Blender ? Can the egg whites be hand whisked , but might not be able to achieve the same frothy level , will it affect the end texture of the waffle ? The rest of the batter mix can just be stir n mix broth hand ?
Thanks, Nellyn
You can still achieve the same frothy level if whisking by hand but it may take 2-3 minutes. It will still be fine 🙂
These were great! It seemed like quite a bit of oil (counting calories), so I subbed half the oil for plain applesauce and did not miss the extra oil! Saving this recipe to make again!
I’ll have to try that healthy substitution! thank you for sharing! 🙂
Do you think this batter will work for pancakes instead of making it into waffles? Thanks!
Vita, I haven’t tried it but sounds like a good idea. Let me know how it goes :).
The waffles are delicious! I always find the perfect recipe on your website. Thank you! I served the waffles with mascarpone on top and maple syrup, we loved them! Thank you so much!
That combination sounds delicious! Thanks so much for sharing 🙂
I have a big bag of organic wheat berries for sprouting that i’ll never get through, so I ground 2 cups worth of flour in my tiny spice grinder with the intent to make waffles. Yours was the first recipe I found and damn are they exquisite. Thanks very much for the recipe.
I’m so glad you liked them! Thanks for sharing your tip about the wheat berries! 🙂
Can i use regural all purpose flour???
Yes, absolutely Inna :). They will turn out even softer.
I make these all the time and love them.! Do you have the nutrition chart?
I don’t have one done for this recipe, but a great source for nutritional values is caloriecount.com. You can copy and paste a full list of ingredients and get the results quickly. I hope that helps 🙂
Never made waffles ever before, but good at following instructions so I followed your recipe and voila! Perfect waffles. It goes a long way that they’re healthy too. My wife and mom loved them too! I made them the second time b/c everyone loved them and this time around I only used the egg white. Still delicious, didn’t even notice any difference. Thank you!
That’s awesome, I’m glad you like the recipe :). Good to know that it worked just with the egg white.
I’m so glad you all enjoyed the waffles so much! It’s great to know that just egg white works well; making them even healthier! Thanks so much for sharing that 🙂
Looks tempting. Cant wait to have this.. But unfortunately I cant eat eggs :-(. Is there a substitute?
I just haven’t tried it with anything else. Sorry I can’t be more helpful. You might try using ground flax seeds with a little water until it gets a jelly consistency and then add that or chia seeds in water until it’s jell-like, but without testing it, I can’t really say how different it will be or how much of it you would need.
Other than the health factor, is there going to be a great difference if i use reg flour vs whole wheat… I dont have any on hand. I will go out and buy it if the waffles wont be as fluffy or wont rise the way theyre supposed to. I dont want to lose out on them being delicious… im making them for a few guests and have only one chance for the batter. Kinda hard on myself hu? hehe. Thanks!!!
ps, i pinned a bunch of your recipes to my “foods to try” pintrest page- cant wait to try them all!
You can absolutely use regular all-purpose flour. We do that sometimes and they do turn out a little bit softer. I hope you love them! 🙂 P.S. Thank you so much for pinning my recipes. I hope you LOVE every one you try!
You did it again! AMAZING recipe! just made these. best waffles ever… didn’t use wheat flour, used canadian flour (that’s all we had) and they were perfect!!!!
ps. we have the same waffles iron. Love it!
I bet they were amazing with Canadian flour. That always seems to make baked goods softer 🙂
So me and my husband finally purchased a waffle maker and tried making this recipe an it came out delicious but ee eliminated honey and used regular flour an tbey still turned oit perfect so thank you for the recipe its definately a keeper one.
Thank you for the great review Irina. I change ingredients from time to time as well and they still come out delicious :).
Hi Natasha!
I’m a HUGE fan of your recipe I make it once a week religiously :).
The problem is I only make them for myself and this recipe is way too much for me to finish before I have to throw out the batter 2 days later. I’ve tried twice to cut the recipe in half. The first time they came out ok (not as good as when I do the recipe as it is) but they were good just the batter wasn’t as liquid-y and the waffles weren’t as fluffy or soft. The second time I tried to cut it in half it was a mess. The batter was completely gooey and pastey so I had to throw the whole thing out. Is there a specific way to cut this in half or even smaller so I could enjoy them without throwing away so much batter?
Thanks!
I haven’t tried cutting it in half yet, but have you tried making all of them and freezing them? We stack them after they are cooled to room temp and then wrap in plastic wrap. To re-heat, you put them in our little toaster oven and it’s the quickest breakfast and they’re still so so good! Way better than store-bought frozen waffles! 🙂 I hope that helps.
These waffles look amazing! I will definitely be making them this weekend. 🙂
I hope you love them!!
I did! I have to say that I am loving your blog recipes. My mom’s side of the family is Ukrainian Canadian and so many of your recipes bring back memories of family gatherings when I was a kid. Your crepes also remind me of the crepes I had in Ukraine several years ago, except the ones I ate there had lemon flavoured cottage cheese. I can’t wait to try out your Blini.
Oooh my goodness lemon flavored cottage cheese. Yum!!
