We’ve been making these whole wheat blueberry waffles about twice a week for the past few months. We’re a little obsessed with our new waffle maker I guess.
This recipe is everything you want in a waffle; crisp on the outside and soft on the inside. It’s modified from the waffle recipe we found on allrecipes.com. We made the waffles healthy by substituting with whole wheat flour, sea salt, olive oil, honey and of course we added some blueberries. With all these “healthifications” (you’ll know by now I make up words when it seems appropriate), you’ll feel great about serving them to your family.
These waffles are really really good! We love them with real maple syrup and raspberry sauce and pile on all kinds of fresh fruit. Remember this recipe when you’re deciding what to make for breakfast on Father’s Day!
Ingredients for Whole Wheat Waffles:
2 large eggs
2 cups whole wheat flour
4 tsp baking powder
1/4 tsp fine sea salt or table salt
1 3/4 cups milk (any kind, we use 1%)
1/2 cup olive oil (we use extra light olive oil), canola oil also works well
1/2 tsp pure vanilla extract
1 Tbsp honey
1 cup fresh blueberries (or 1 cup frozen with 1 tsp whole wheat flour)
What you’ll need:
A Waffle maker. We happen to love ours so we recommend it 🙂
How to Make Whole Wheat Honey Waffles:
1. Preheat your waffle maker to medium heat. In a large bowl beat 2 eggs on high speed until frothy and bubbly (1 min)
2. Place your sifter over your beaten eggs and sift in your 2 cups flour, 4 tsp baking powder and 1/4 tsp salt. Add the bran that’s left behind in your sifter; this is the oober healthy part of these waffles.
3. Pour in 1 3/4 cups milk, 1/2 cup olive oil, 1/2 tsp vanilla and 1 Tbsp honey. Whisk the mixture together until smooth.
4. In a small bowl, Mix together 1 cup blueberries with 1 tsp whole wheat flour. The flour coating will keep the blueberries from getting juicy. Use a spatula to fold in the frozen blueberries. Try not to over-mix or you’ll start getting blue streaks in your batter.
5. Spray the preheated waffle iron to prevent sticking then pour your batter into your preheated waffle almost to the edges (you’ll know if you poured too much if you get batter that leaks out of the sides (put a paper towel underneath just in case). Serve waffles right away or let them rest on a wire rack. Don’t stack them while they are warm or they will become squishy and no one likes squishy waffles.
.
See that strange hole on the edge of the waffle? That’s how you know they are homemade. What do you love on your waffles?

Hi Natasha, if you have too much batter can you freeze it to use it another time? Or just refrigerate it for a few days? Thanks Avril
Hi Avril, we always freeze half of them since there are only four of us. Wrap them well so they don’t get freezer burn.
Great recipe. Thank you. Suggest you state (frozen) wild blueberries since they are smaller. Also, mention waffle maker temperature. I first set medium on my old waffle maker and created a sticky mess. Next batch I preheated to high with great result.
Glad you enjoyed it, thank you for the suggestions too!
These were perfect! Exactly what I was craving. I make a lot of waffles and definitely can’t say that about all of them. This will be my new go-to.
Thank you very much for sharing this recipe!
You’re very welcome! I’m glad you found your new go-to recipe.
Great flavor, but I have an old-fashioned gravity lid waffle maker, no sensor, and the batter was too thick (first batch came out with frilly edges, second batch was thick, more like a cake, and oozed out the side!); recommend increasing the milk to 2 c for a little thinner batter. Otherwise, with homemade blueberry syrup, it was great (ya gotta LOVE blueberries, though). Thanks, Natasha — definitely a keeper. BTW, excellent suggestion about pre-flouring the berries — they maintained their integrity.
Thank you for sharing your experience trying out this recipe, John. Glad you enjoyed it!
This recipe has the same amount of flour (2 cups) as your Fluffy Waffle recipe does but it makes fewer waffles. Using frozen berries seemed to mess with the sensor on our waffle iron and they started to burn and then I caught on! I made the batter 3 hours in advance and put it in the fridge until needed. The whole wheat flour absorbed a lot of the liquid and the batter ended up with a lively consistency. A keeper recipe and will try it w/o fruit next time and offer it as a side sauce.
Hi Roger! Thank you so much for sharing that with me! I’m glad that worked out for you!
Hi Natasha, as I don’t have an waffle iron can I bake these in the oven instead of so at what temperature and for how long
Thank you for your kind advice
R,
Louella
Hi Loella, I imagine that would work however I haven’t tried that yet to advise of the timing. If you do an experiment, please share with us how it goes!
Natasha I love your recipes, this whole wheat waffle one was delicious family loved it. I made sure to keep the eggs at room temperature and also the milk. Delicious recipe thank you! I was only able to make 5 waffles instead of 6 though. If I want to double this recipe or triple it do I double all the ingredients?
Hi Rema, yes, you will double all of the ingredients to make a double portion. I’m so glad you enjoyed it!
I just made these. Absolutely delicious. Thank you Natasha
I’m so happy you enjoyed this recipe, Rose! Thank you for sharing that with me!
I just made your waffle recipe and it is the best! This will definitely be my go to recipe from now on. I made half the recipe and used chopped plums and cherries instead of the blueberries. Thank you so much, Natasha.
That’s so great! It sounds like you have a new favorite, Janet!
Perfect recipe! Just what I was looking for 😆💕 thank you!
You are very welcome. Thank you for giving this recipe a great review!
Can I substitute cow milk with buttermilk or coconut milk?
HI Anna, I haven’t tested those substitutions but I think it’s worth experimenting. If you try it out, please let me know how it goes.
I’ve made this waffle about 3 times and I add organic Frozen blueberries and my family loves it. I type this as I’m making my 4th batch. Yum!
I’m so happy you enjoyed that. Thank you for sharing that with us!
Hi! do these freeze well? And hoss wed would you freeze them?
Thanks:)
Hi Eleni, Yes, we always freeze half of them since there are only four of us. Wrap them well so they don’t get freezer burn.
Morning! Made these on this snowy morning using gluten free flour, same measurements of every thing and substituting sugar for the honey. These came out perfect. Crisp outside (paper than regular flour) soft center. My husband and kids inhaled them and a second batch was called for! Best waffle recipe I’ve tried, didn’t have to separate eggs and you can’t taste the baking powder – love it.
Thank you so much for sharing your experiment with us! I’m so happy you enjoyed that!
I typically do half and half on white flour vs whole wheat and they taste exactly like all white flour waffles. Also love the use of honey instead of sugar! We enjoy our waffles a tad bit sweeter so I do add just a tad more of honey. Amazing recipe for waffles, 11/10 recommend to anyone!
That’s just awesome!! Thank you for sharing your wonderful review 🙂
Hi,
I halved the recipe and got 7 mini waffles. They were very delicious. My 3 1/2 year old son liked it too.
Thanks.
Chandra
You’re so welcome Chandra! That is the best when kids love what we moms make.
Hi Natasha.
These waffles look delicious. I want to make them. Also the link you included for waffle maker when i click on it some anti snoring solution pops up instead. Lol.. Is it just my phone?
Lol. That is so strange that it pulls that up. Definitely should not be a snoring solution. Here is the waffle maker we use. I’ll fix that link above 🙂 Thanks for letting me know!
These are amazing! They are nice and firm and will re-heat beautifully in the toaster!
Hi Erin, Thank you for sharing your wonderful review 🙂
im not sure if this was asked before, but is it possible to make the batter night before? would i add the baking powder night before also or in the morning before im ready to make them?
Hi Emmily, I honestly haven’t tried refrigerating the batter overnight so I can’t say if they would still rise as well. If you experiment with it, let me know 🙂
Hi Natasha! Happy New Year!
I just made this waffles again (we’ve been using this recipe for several years now) and it’s literally the best recipe ever! I usually just use all white flour and, depending on my kiddos, I omit the blue berries. Still turns out perfect every time!! I also substitute a couple table spoons of cornstarch for flour and the waffles stay crispy longer….oh one more thing, I didn’t have any oil so I substituted for unsalted butter (3/4 cup melted butter for 1/2 cup oil). This changed the texture but they were so good!
Another amazing recipe! Thank you so much!!
Hello Ira! Happy New Year to you! I’m so glad to hear how much you and your family enjoy the recipe. Thanks for following and sharing your fantastic review with other readers!
