Ukrainian Thanksgiving Church Potluck

Many different types of food for Thanksgiving church potluck

This post may contain affiliate links. Read my disclosure policy.

Our Church celebrated Thanksgiving yesterday with a lengthy service (3+ hrs). Feels like we were in church all day – from morning practices till after the potluck (11:30 ish to 5:45 pm) Ok, I guess that was the whole day.

Anyway, I wanted to give you all some ideas of what to make for the upcoming holidays. Thank you to my hubby who took the photos. True, I don’t have recipes for several of these, but go ahead, ask your questions and I’ll see what I can acquire :).

Well, here’s a glimpse of what was served up at our church potluck. We all ate like kings today! When God blesses, he does so abundantly. If you recognize one of these recipes, please feel free to give the rest of us the details 🙂

The mystery meat in the last row is chicken. Skin the chicken, cut off all the meat, chop, and season with salt, pepper and garlic. Stuff the meat mixture back in the skin and tie with kitchen twine. Roast in the oven under a brick. Slice when cool. Best served cold or on sandwiches. My mother used to make this years ago.

1st one on the first row- trubochki,
3rd one second row, 3rd one thirst row, and the three pictures before the beans with almonds look interesting as well if possible. I know I am asking for too much, but I just want to see what would you recommend for me to do. I volunteered to make 3 cakes or desserts since everyone else is making other food already. When I checked this post I was like wow, I should ask Natasha for some of the recipes 🙂 Thank you!

I don’t have the trubochki recipe since I don’t have the special mold 🙁
Here is the Green Beans and Almonds recipe
3rd second row was a type of kiev cake. I have a similar one posted here.
I don’t remember what was in the 3rd one first row; It wasn’t one of my cakes. I’ll be on the lookout for it at this years thanksgiving church potluck (Sunday!) 🙂 Hope that helps

The waffle trubochki require a special press so I never got that recipe because I don’t have the press (yet!) and the cake with oranges, no one has claimed it. I’ll be on the lookout or it at the next church potluck.

No but I know what cake you are referring to. I think someone in church makes it. I’ll try to find out. If you find a great recipe for it in the mean time, please share! 🙂

The photos are beautiful! I would love to know the names of the dishes in these photos and also ask for the recipes of many, especially the cakes. All I need is a cup of coffee to go along with them. Do you know anyone from the Ukrainian Baptist church in Berwyn(Chicago)? Wishing you and your family a Blessed Thanksgiving.

I just got a good recipe for tooshana kapusta from a seasoned cook in our church, but I have to test it first so I can give exact measurements and cook times. I’ve never made turkey before. I’ll have to watch my mom this year and document the process, but it probably won’t be available till next year 🙁 sorry, I know that doesn’t help much.

Looks wonderful The roll, sixth down, center, looks a whole lot like a nut roll, not a chocolate filled roll. Ground nuts (a mix of hazelnuts, walnuts, and pecans is great) mixed with some sugar and milk, rolled up in a light, slightly sweet yeast dough. Poppyseed filled is great too.

May I ask what church you go to?

Thank you. When you mentioned a 3 hour service I was thinking maybe you are Orthodox, but some of your phrasing in the About tab was not in the usual Orthodox lexicon. I was a bit confused.

No, not orthodox 🙂 Our holiday services are always very lengthy, kids choirs, youth choir, adult choir, songs, sermons, ….

Please get any and all the recipes for any or all the beautiful cakes. If I baked any one of those cakes, my husband would marry me all over again…lol

Seriously, I’m somewhat obsessed about cake recipes and would make it my mission to get the recipes! I’ll leave that in your hands….

    It would be greatly appreciated.
