The Best Tuna Salad with Apples
This is hands down the best tuna salad recipe I’ve tried and the flavors are exciting! My sister Anna was the genius behind this recipe and called me to share. I rushed to her house for a taste…and that taste turned into an entire bowl. This salad is fresh, loaded, and delicious; in an “I can’t stop eating it” kind of way.
The surprising addition of green apple and avocado creates a nice contrast between the crisp tartness and delicious creaminess. It also gives this tuna salad a southern spin. There’s some serious chemistry going on in this salad! If you love tuna recipes, check out our Avocado Tuna Salad.

Ingredients for Apple Tuna Salad
This tuna salad recipe is the elevated version of classic tuna salad with the addition of apple, avocado, and toasted almonds. This may just become your go-to tuna recipe. You will need:
- Canned Tuna – the main ingredient is a pantry staple. We used tuna in water but canned tuna in oil will work, just be sure it is well-drained.
- Green Apple – diced green apples add a crisp bite to this and make the salad taste so fresh. If you don’t have apples, you can substitute celery for a more traditional tuna salad.
- Avocados – add creaminess and flavor so you can get away with using less mayonnaise.
- Toasted Almonds – add nice texture and crunch. You can easily omit almonds if you don’t have them on hand.
- Lemon Juice – use fresh lemon juice for the best flavor and avoid concentrate. If you don’t have lemons on hand, try substituting with ½ Tbsp dijon mustard.

How to Make Tuna Salad with Apples
- Toast your almonds in a dry skillet until golden brown. Remove them and let them cool slightly.
- Drain the tuna. I open the lid and then press it down firmly over the tuna to drain off as much water as my gigantic muscles (not) can squeeze out. If your tuna is too wet, your salad will be wet = no.
- Combine everything in a large mixing bowl and add a pinch of black pepper and lemon juice to taste.

Make-Ahead
When stored properly, tuna salads can stay fresh in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Since we are working with fish and mayonnaise, keep the salad refrigerated until ready to serve.
To Serve
This salad is a versatile dish that can be served in countless ways! Some of my favorites ways to serve this recipe include:
- Tuna sandwiches with soft bread or toasted bread
- Tuna salad wraps in a homemade tortilla or pita wrap
- Lettuce Wrap – For low-carb options, consider serving inside a lettuce wrap or in a halved avocado
- As a dip with crackers or tortilla chips

Natasha, ” Dis” is some great tuna! I love this Tuna Salad Recipe! It is delicious and the toasted almonds add a great depth of flavor.
Thanks and keep the recipes coming.
Thanks Victoria! We plan on it! Another great one coming this Friday!
I feel so bad leaving this comment, I had to miss two ingredients, nuts since my wife cannot have them due to medical reasons, and the avocado was not in the cards this time. Taste test however, outstanding, the apple and the lime/lemon juice is key here, the juice needed to prevent the apple from discoloring but provides excellent flavor. I used a brown onion this time, next time I will use a red onion. Overall impression, another recipe that is worthy of 10 stars. Thank you, Natasha, even though I had to omit some items, for a excellent recipe. Next review will be with fresh cooked tuna and red onion.
You’re welcome Lee! I’m glad to hear the recipe was a success. Thanks for sharing your helpful review!
I am looking forward to making this, minus the nuts, and I will try the tuna first using fresh cooked tuna, and the chicken variant that some of the viewers have suggested, will comment on these shortly, thank you Natasha for another great recipe.
You’re welcome Lee, please do let me know what you think!
Can I use red onion instead of a regular one?
Hi Otilia, yes that would work great!

This recipe is GENIUS! I was skeptical at first because it didn’t seem to pack much of a flavor punch- but it’s so deliciously refreshing that you don’t need to add anything else, not even salt! This recipe will become one of my go-to’s for the summer.
Awesome! I’m glad to hear you enjoy the recipe as much as I do! Thanks for sharing your excellent review Tania!

If I can’t finish it on that day, how long can I keep it in the fridge?
Salt? Cucumbers? Did I miss something?
Oh dear, I was completely thinking of my other tuna salad!! I updated my reply so it makes way more sense! 😉 Thanks Beth!
Hi May, I love it most the day it is made because the apples are freshest on day 1, but it will still be good on day 2 with refrigeration.

Hi Natasha,
Just wondering if you edited the recipe? I swear I made it before but with cumin or curry powder added to it?
Hi Katrina, I haven’t changed anything about the recipe and I also haven’t tested those add-ins so maybe you were experimenting with them? I’m not sure, but I definitely have not changed the recipe 🙂
Hi Natasha! Thanks for the recipe. I have my daughter and her friend visiting with me and this morning the stars aligned!! I was looking for a different way to do tuna spread and stumbled upon your recipe and i happened to have all the ingredients needed. They loved it!!! I did what you suggested and brolied for 2 minutes with cheese. They both asked for more. Haha! This is a keeper for me. Thanks, natasha!
That’s so awesome! Thank you so much for sharing that with me. I’m glad you all enjoyed it.
The best tuna salad of all time!
Thank you for the great review! 🙂
How long does this keep? Does the avocado turn brown at some me point or does the lemon keep it fresh. Thanks very much, can’t wait to make this
We’ve always finished it up by day 2 but it does keep overnight in the fridge and the lemon juice does help to keep it fresh.
My family is addicted to this tuna salad! We are from the deep South where tuna salad always consists of mayo, relish and boiled eggs. We had been eating it that way for so long and we all felt like we needed a change…this recipe did not disappoint! I send it through Pinterest to friends all the time now!
Thank you for that wonderful review! I’m so happy you enjoyed it! 🙂 P.S. Thank you so much for sharing it with your friends on Pinterest – I sure appreciate that!
I’m anxious to try this recipe but the ingredients are vague. 4 cans tuna, but how many ounces per can? It helps SO much to state the size of the ingredient, like 14 oz can, etc. Thanks!
Hi Pat, sorry I totally missed that each can is 5 oz. I hope the picture of the tuna cans helped to figure it out if you needed the answer sooner, but I did update the recipe to clarify. Thanks for asking! 🙂
