This creamy Horseradish Sauce rivals the best Steakhouse horseradish I’ve tried in both Ruth’s Chris and the Cottonwood Grill. It is excellent paired with prime rib, steak or beef tenderloin.

Horseradish Sauce Recipe:
This horseradish cream sauce is so easy and will impress your dinner guests! It keeps well in the refrigerator for at least 2 weeks and only gets better as the flavors meld.
This sauce is creamy and balanced by the cider vinegar. It isn’t overly pungent and won’t mask the flavors of the excellent prime rib you’ve prepared. If you like your horseradish sauce a little more potent, add horseradish to taste.

What is Prepared Horseradish?
You can purchase jars labeled “prepared horseradish” in the refrigerated section of your grocery store.
If you have a fresh horseradish root growing in your yard, you can make homemade prepared horseradish in a food processor with some water, vinegar and salt but keep in mind homemade is twice as strong as store-bought so add it to taste.
Prepared horseradish is so versatile. We love it in crab salad, coleslaw and “Hron” (a Russian sauce with grated beets).
How to Make Horseradish Sauce:
It really doesn’t get any easier than this: combine all of the ingredients and stir!

What Can I Serve Horseradish Sauce With?
Horseradish sauce for prime rib is obvious but some of these ideas may surprise you! It adds memorable flavor to:
- Prime Rib
- Steak Sandwiches
- Beef Tenderloin
- Pork Tenderloin
- Sushi (instead of wasabi)
- Deviled Eggs

Q: What is YOUR favorite way to enjoy Creamy Horseradish Sauce? I would love to hear from you in a comment below!

Love horseradish sauce especially with prime rib. I will be trying this recipe, it looks very good. My Russian grandma always added a little beet juice when she made her horseradish, I’m not sure why.
I love the idea of serving it with Prime Rib! Thank you for that awesome review.
How would you prepare this with powdered horseradish?
Hi Melanie, I have not tested that with powdered to advise. If you experiment, let me know how you liked the recipe
The best ever. I served this with prime rib at Christmas, & it was wonderful. My son said “I could just drink this, it’s so good.” There was none left at the end of the meal. In the past I would just wing it, this year i found your recipe, & now I keep it mixed up in my fridge, ready to go. I did add more horseradish.
That’s so great! It sounds like you have a new favorite, Yvonne!
Could I replace the sour cream with whipped heavy cream or would that alter the taste and/or texture too much? Thanks so much!
Hi Amy, I haven’t tried it that way so I can’t say for sure but I assume it will significantly change the taste and texture. It will be very liquidy.
Finally found a chef that I could actually follow. Recepies are simple to follow and most times have all ingredients without having to run to store, just finished making pumpkin cake and it smells delicious, thank you so much.
I’m so inspired reading your review. Thank you!
I’ve just grated fresh horseradish from the garden (I’m not crying from the fumes, honestly), and combined it with lemon juice instead of the cider vinegar, and unsweetened Greek yoghurt, s&p, and a finely chopped habanada chilli. It tastes ace already so a few hours to mature should make it awesome for the roast beef tonight.
Thank you so much for sharing that with me.
Made this tonight for a grilled eye round roast. It was very tasty and simple to make. This recipe is now my go to horseradish sauce recipe.
Thank you for posting it!
That’s so great, Curt!! Sounds like you found a new favorite!
I love this on steak, but I absolutely adore it on potatoes, especially roasted potatoes! I’m so glad I came across your recipe because I now keep this in my fridge just about all the time.
I’m so happy you enjoyed that, Heather! Thank you for sharing that with us!
I think I’ll make my own prepared
Horseradish use your recipe and use it to make your recipe for horseradish sauce.
Thank you
You’re so welcome! I hope you love this recipe!
Oh my gosh, this recipe is superb. I made it for prime rib and just made it again for believe it or not, a dipping sauce for chicken wings. Rave reviews both times! Thank you so much!!
That’s so great! It sounds like you have a new favorite, Joann!
I’m sorry, but I might be the only one that didn’t like this recipe. The mayo taste came through along with the overpowering apple cider. Not sure why this received so many stars?–I would have gone with some lemon juice rather than the strong apple cider and skipped the mayo.
Hi Amy, I haven’t noticed the mayo overpowering. I wonder if maybe you used a different kind of horseradish (maybe a creamy horseradish sauce was used instead of a prepared horseradish that is called for in this recipe?). That could make all the difference.
Since it was all I could find, I used 4 tablespoons of the creamy horseradish and left out the mayo. Came out perfect.
I am so glad to hear that, Ruth. Thank you for your wonderful feedback!
How many carbs?
Hi Vera, usually the carbs display in the nutrition label and if they don’t display, that typically means there are 0 carbs.
I have used a similar recipe (no mayo). This is so much better!
I actually grate my own horseradish and then stop the sharpness process after seven minutes with apple cider vinegar, so did not add more. It’s the way my Dad always prepared it:)
I really enjoy your site and your videos. You make me smile.
I’m so happy you enjoyed that. Thank you for sharing that with us!

Love the idea of making this at home! Looks so delicious!
Yes!! There is nothing like fresh and homemade :). I hope you love this horseradish sauce 🙂
This sauce is so easy and goes fresh on all the things. Thank you!!
You’re so welcome! Thank you for that great review!
Oh my goodness!!! This horseradish sauce is the bomb!!!
Isn’t it amazing?! Thank you for sharing your wonderful review, Becky!
Really good sauce however the prepared horseradish already has vinegar so next time I will skip the ACV…I like the pungency of the horseradish so I opted for an extra tablespoon and it rivaled my favorite creamy horseradish sauce from Chop House!
Thanks for the recipe!
I’m so happy you enjoyed that. Thank you for sharing that with us!
Fantastic…making a day ahead for flavors to meld.
Thank you so much for sharing that with me.
Oh yum!!! This horseradish sauce is the bomb!!!
You’re so nice! Thank you Becky!
Love this recipe!
I’m so happy to hear that! Thank you for that wonderful review!
Looks so much tastier than the stuff that comes in a jar. And now I’m hungry for some prime rib! 😉
Yes!! There’s no comparison. Homemade will spoil you forever because you’ll never want canned again especially over an expensive cut of beef. Mmmm 🙂
This is the best recipe website ever! All the recipes (too many to count) that I have tried are always delish and easy! Thanks to your videos and easy to follow instructions. Please don’t ever stop. Your awesome! I’m a novice cook and your recipes make me a chef! Thank you so much. Much appreciated
