This creamy Horseradish Sauce rivals the best Steakhouse horseradish I’ve tried in both Ruth’s Chris and the Cottonwood Grill. It is excellent paired with prime rib, steak or beef tenderloin.

Horseradish Sauce Recipe:
This horseradish cream sauce is so easy and will impress your dinner guests! It keeps well in the refrigerator for at least 2 weeks and only gets better as the flavors meld.
This sauce is creamy and balanced by the cider vinegar. It isn’t overly pungent and won’t mask the flavors of the excellent prime rib you’ve prepared. If you like your horseradish sauce a little more potent, add horseradish to taste.

What is Prepared Horseradish?
You can purchase jars labeled “prepared horseradish” in the refrigerated section of your grocery store.
If you have a fresh horseradish root growing in your yard, you can make homemade prepared horseradish in a food processor with some water, vinegar and salt but keep in mind homemade is twice as strong as store-bought so add it to taste.
Prepared horseradish is so versatile. We love it in crab salad, coleslaw and “Hron” (a Russian sauce with grated beets).
How to Make Horseradish Sauce:
It really doesn’t get any easier than this: combine all of the ingredients and stir!

Horseradish sauce for prime rib is obvious but some of these ideas may surprise you! It adds memorable flavor to:
- Prime Rib
- Steak Sandwiches
- Beef Tenderloin
- Pork Tenderloin
- Sushi (instead of wasabi)
- Deviled Eggs

Q: What is YOUR favorite way to enjoy Creamy Horseradish Sauce? I would love to hear from you in a comment below!

Good morning! I have either dried chives, or fresh green onions (without another trip to the store!) Do you think one would be better than the other as a fresh chive sub? Thank you – I can’t wait to try this!
Hi Suzi, fresh green onions would work well finely chopped. I hope you love the homemade horseradish sauce and Merry Christmas!
Thanks so much! I appreciate it.
Can I grade fresh graded horse radish and ad it to your recipe
Hi Laura, you can make homemade prepared horseradish in a food processor with some water, vinegar and salt but keep in mind homemade is twice as strong as store-bought so add it to taste.
This is the best horseradish sauce I’ve made.
That’s just aweomse! I’m so glad you enjoyed it Rex!
Do you have to use prepared horseradish? I can’t find any…only creamy. Is that ok?
Hi Traci, creamy horseradish is essentially a pre-made horseradish sauce so I would not recommend it and you’ll probably need to make significant changes to the recipe.
Have you ever tried whipping cream and horseradish sauce with prime rib? It’s fantastic!
Yes! We love horseradish sauce with prime rib! The perfect combination!
Sounds like that would work. what is the ratio?
With gravalax or smoked trout…you recipe was wonderful with those too
Thank you so much for sharing that with me.
AMAZING!!! Made this for thanksgiving and it blew everyone away! Now I can’t have a roast without it🤩
Hi Sarah!! That’s awesome! Thank you so much for sharing that with me!
This is by far the best horseradish sauce I have ever tasted! I will never go back to the store-bought! I honestly even think it’s better than what I have had at a high-end steak house.
That’s so great, Hilda! It sounds like you have a new favorite!
Absolutely delicious! Everything, EVERYTHING I make from your site is amazing! Thank you so much! I love the helpful videos as well! I made this with the beef tenderloin. Amazing!

OMG! The mother of all Horseradish Sauces! On Spicy Sweet potato waffle fries!
HEAVEN!
I’m so glad to hear that Jen! Thank you for that wonderful review!
Hi Natasha, thank you for such a great suggestion for my steak sauce! Where will I find horseradish, I haven’t had much luck so far. Thank you!
Hello Luda, you’re welcome. In most grocery stores, horseradish is kept in the condiment aisle. Look for it in a jar or plastic container near relishes, mayo and pickles.
Ni Natasha, found a couple different brands at Walmart, but my husband didn’t approve. He likes to make his own, and recently ran out of home made horseradish. He says store bought takes bitter. Do you like the brand you get? I am on a mission
Hi Luda, the one we use works great. I hope you like it! I have found the refrigerated ones to be better and have better texture also.
Horseradish generally in cold section of store. Usually near sauerkraut or the cold pickles.
NEVER in the condiment isle, not the good ones anyway. GOLD HOT is the best.
I shop at my local Walmart and they have it in the refrigerated case above the sour cream and the cottage cheese usually on the top shelf.
Luda, our prepared horseradish is in the deli section of the grocery store in a refrigerator. Just ask a butcher or someone at the deli counter and they should know. It’s not in the condiment aisle.
It’s amazing iin favor of me to have a site, which is beneficial in sulport of my experience.
thanks admin
Hi Velva, I’m so glad you’re enjoying our site!
Perfect sauce! The sauce went great with our thin sliced steak. I didn’t have chives so I added about 1/4 teaspoon of onion powder after I made half of the recipe. Thanks!
Isn’t the flavor amazing! I’m so glad you enjoyed that! Thank you for that great review!
This sauce is yummy! I didn’t have Apple cider vinegar so I used distilled vinegar but still great. Reminds me the sauce that fancy markets have with their beef. Exactly what I wanted!
I’m so glad you enjoyed that Kaitlin.
This was outstanding on my eye round roast.Thank you from all nine who dined. You are the best!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thank you so much for your good feedback, John!
My family likes horse radish on corn beef briskett or the creamy sauce on a rubin with rye bread. Yummy!!!
Great to hear that, Anne. Thanks for giving this recipe a try!
I have never commented on a recipe before now. This sauce is perfectly balanced. I always winged it before, and now realize I was missing the mayonnaise and vinegar, and some proportions. Thanks!
You’re very welcome. Glad you enjoyed this and I hope you love every recipe that you try!
Delicious. I went a wee bit heavier with the horseradish b/c I like the heat, and I used lemon juice in place of the vinegar. It added some tartness and brightness. This is a nice way for me to have my horseradish with my beef (we had it with ribeye steaks) and not blow my head off.
Thank you so much for sharing that with me Ronna! I’m so glad you loved this recipe!
You are so refreshing with the down to earth recipes. I am 71 and I love all the basic recipes. I am making prime rib for New Years and I have all the ingredients for sauce. Thanks
Happy New Year, Cindy! Thank you for sharing that with me.
What is prepared horseradish sauce I looked I couldn’t find it I have regular horseradish what to do
Hi Robert, prepared horseradish is just finely grated horseradish. I found it in the refrigerated section of our grocery store. You might ask a grocery store employee where they keep it – it can be in weird spots (it’s next to the refrigerated sauerkraut, Mexican cheeses and raw tortillas in our store). I have a photo of it in the post (see the third photo from the top).
