This creamy Horseradish Sauce rivals the best Steakhouse horseradish I’ve tried in both Ruth’s Chris and the Cottonwood Grill. It is excellent paired with prime rib, steak or beef tenderloin.

Horseradish Sauce Recipe:

This horseradish cream sauce is so easy and will impress your dinner guests! It keeps well in the refrigerator for at least 2 weeks and only gets better as the flavors meld.

This sauce is creamy and balanced by the cider vinegar. It isn’t overly pungent and won’t mask the flavors of the excellent prime rib you’ve prepared. If you like your horseradish sauce a little more potent, add horseradish to taste.

What is Prepared Horseradish?

You can purchase jars labeled “prepared horseradish” in the refrigerated section of your grocery store.

If you have a fresh horseradish root growing in your yard, you can make homemade prepared horseradish in a food processor with some water, vinegar and salt but keep in mind homemade is twice as strong as store-bought so add it to taste.

Prepared horseradish is so versatile. We love it in crab salad, coleslaw and “Hron” (a Russian sauce with grated beets).

Good morning! I have either dried chives, or fresh green onions (without another trip to the store!) Do you think one would be better than the other as a fresh chive sub? Thank you – I can’t wait to try this!

Hi Suzi, fresh green onions would work well finely chopped. I hope you love the homemade horseradish sauce and Merry Christmas!

Do you have to use prepared horseradish? I can’t find any…only creamy. Is that ok?

Hi Traci, creamy horseradish is essentially a pre-made horseradish sauce so I would not recommend it and you’ll probably need to make significant changes to the recipe.

Hello Luda, you’re welcome. In most grocery stores, horseradish is kept in the condiment aisle. Look for it in a jar or plastic container near relishes, mayo and pickles.

Ni Natasha, found a couple different brands at Walmart, but my husband didn’t approve. He likes to make his own, and recently ran out of home made horseradish. He says store bought takes bitter. Do you like the brand you get? I am on a mission

Horseradish generally in cold section of store. Usually near sauerkraut or the cold pickles.
NEVER in the condiment isle, not the good ones anyway. GOLD HOT is the best.

I shop at my local Walmart and they have it in the refrigerated case above the sour cream and the cottage cheese usually on the top shelf.

Luda, our prepared horseradish is in the deli section of the grocery store in a refrigerator. Just ask a butcher or someone at the deli counter and they should know. It’s not in the condiment aisle.

Perfect sauce! The sauce went great with our thin sliced steak. I didn’t have chives so I added about 1/4 teaspoon of onion powder after I made half of the recipe. Thanks!

This sauce is yummy! I didn’t have Apple cider vinegar so I used distilled vinegar but still great. Reminds me the sauce that fancy markets have with their beef. Exactly what I wanted!

Delicious. I went a wee bit heavier with the horseradish b/c I like the heat, and I used lemon juice in place of the vinegar. It added some tartness and brightness. This is a nice way for me to have my horseradish with my beef (we had it with ribeye steaks) and not blow my head off.

Hi Robert, prepared horseradish is just finely grated horseradish. I found it in the refrigerated section of our grocery store. You might ask a grocery store employee where they keep it – it can be in weird spots (it’s next to the refrigerated sauerkraut, Mexican cheeses and raw tortillas in our store). I have a photo of it in the post (see the third photo from the top).
