This creamy Horseradish Sauce rivals the best Steakhouse horseradish I’ve tried in both Ruth’s Chris and the Cottonwood Grill. It is excellent paired with prime rib, steak or beef tenderloin.

Horseradish Sauce Recipe:
This horseradish cream sauce is so easy and will impress your dinner guests! It keeps well in the refrigerator for at least 2 weeks and only gets better as the flavors meld.
This sauce is creamy and balanced by the cider vinegar. It isn’t overly pungent and won’t mask the flavors of the excellent prime rib you’ve prepared. If you like your horseradish sauce a little more potent, add horseradish to taste.
What is Prepared Horseradish?
You can purchase jars labeled “prepared horseradish” in the refrigerated section of your grocery store.
If you have a fresh horseradish root growing in your yard, you can make homemade prepared horseradish in a food processor with some water, vinegar and salt but keep in mind homemade is twice as strong as store-bought so add it to taste.
Prepared horseradish is so versatile. We love it in crab salad, coleslaw and “Hron” (a Russian sauce with grated beets).
How to Make Horseradish Sauce:
It really doesn’t get any easier than this: combine all of the ingredients and stir!

Hi Natasha,
Can I use cream horseradish? This is what I have right now.
Thank you
Hi Nix, I haven’t tried that substitution but one of our readers wrote: “since it was all I could find, I used 4 tablespoons of the creamy horseradish and left out the mayo. Came out perfect.”
Thanks for your reply will make this for thanksgiving dinner 😘

I will definitely try this! Just a small correction, horseradish sauce with beef is traditional in Britain. Your article lists this as American cuisine.
Hi Michael, thanks for sharing! Do you make it the same way in Britain?
Omg! This is an awesome recipe! Thanks for sharing!
You’re welcome! I hope you love it, Clair!
Good stuff! I added way more horseradish because I’m spicy like that! Had it with zucchini I air-fried.

Can you use fresh horseradish root? If so, how would I prepare it and how much would I use?
Thank you
Hi Sandy, it can be done; we have a note on that in the recipe: “If you have a fresh horseradish root growing in your yard, you can make homemade prepared horseradish in a food processor with some water, vinegar, and salt but keep in mind homemade is twice as strong as store-bought so add it to taste.” I hope it helps.

This went on broccoli fritters! And it was perfect.
Yum! That’s a great idea! Thank you for sharing Robin!
Followed exactly and it tasted like vinegar, first pic on your blig
Did you do a TBSP or TSP of vinegar? I’ve made this and it’s perfect and not too strong on vinegar. Leads me to think you may have misread the recipe.
Hi Jason, the recipe calls for “1 tsp” which is 1 teaspoon. It sounds like you added 3 times the amount of vinegar that is called for which would make it too vinegary. I hope you try it again. It’s a very popular recipe on our site.
This was excellent. Made today for Easter with prime rib. Easy and delicious.
Glad you liked it, Andrea!
What do you think about putting this on salmon?
Ted’s Montana Grill has a horseradish sauce for their salmon, I’ve been trying to find one for such a long time.
Oh! I haven’t tried that, but that sounds amazing! If you experiment, let me know how you liked the recipe.
Add tourtiere to the list this sauce is delicious with!
Printed and put it in my home file — tip top! Made it for our corned beef and cabbage dinner, it was perfect.
Glad you loved it, Kim. Thank you for your awesome review!
How much sauce does this recipe make?
Hi Linda, please see the printable recipe card and scroll to serving size. “Servings: 12 people (yields 3/4 cup)”
I love making Baltimore pit beef or sometimes I just grill up a chunk of top or bottom round and slice thin on my meat slicer. I have always used my favorite BBQ sauce, Sonny’s. I wanted to try a Horsey sauce other than from Arby’s. From here on out, this will be kept prepared in my fridge. I can’t imagine a better version. A+, Thank you!
You’re welcome, Jason! I’m so glad you enjoyed this recipe!
I use on corned beef or roast beef sandwiches
I use as spread on sandwiches.
