This creamy Horseradish Sauce rivals the best Steakhouse horseradish I’ve tried in both Ruth’s Chris and the Cottonwood Grill. It is excellent paired with prime rib, steak or beef tenderloin.

Horseradish Sauce Recipe:
This horseradish cream sauce is so easy and will impress your dinner guests! It keeps well in the refrigerator for at least 2 weeks and only gets better as the flavors meld.
This sauce is creamy and balanced by the cider vinegar. It isn’t overly pungent and won’t mask the flavors of the excellent prime rib you’ve prepared. If you like your horseradish sauce a little more potent, add horseradish to taste.
What is Prepared Horseradish?
You can purchase jars labeled “prepared horseradish” in the refrigerated section of your grocery store.
If you have a fresh horseradish root growing in your yard, you can make homemade prepared horseradish in a food processor with some water, vinegar and salt but keep in mind homemade is twice as strong as store-bought so add it to taste.
Prepared horseradish is so versatile. We love it in crab salad, coleslaw and “Hron” (a Russian sauce with grated beets).
How to Make Horseradish Sauce:
It really doesn’t get any easier than this: combine all of the ingredients and stir!

Q: What is YOUR favorite way to enjoy Creamy Horseradish Sauce? I would love to hear from you in a comment below!
The best I’ve ever tasted, period! It’s going to be great on my smoked brisket.
So glad you loved it!
What is a nondairy substitute for sour cream?thank you so very much.
Hi Patricia! I have not tested an alternative. One of my readers reported using Greek yogurt with great results. I wonder if you could do the same with a dairy-free sour cream or yogurt. Let us know if you experiment.
Thank you for your recipe. I will use it on spicy chicken recipes for sure!
How long will this last in the fridge? Thinking about making for holiday gifts. Thanks!
Hi Cheri! See my note above- “It keeps well in the refrigerator for at least 2 weeks and only gets better as the flavors meld.”
This is a great basic recipe. I add a few tweaks.
Sub lemon for vinegar
Add a little hot sauce and mustard
I like mine with more pepper
Sounds good, great to hear that you loved it!
Doing Prime Rib tonight and I also LOVE lemon, but also ACV. My compromise, make the recipe as written, zest & juice a lemon, pulp and all, and drink that.
The comments are so positive and it sounds great. My only change “might” be increased pepper. I Like pepper and don’t want to be short and hate trying to grind 1/8 tsp so I may go over on the pepper. I am so ready for this meal. At $30CAN/LB I can’t afford to make any mistakes! Will make Aus Jus for Day 2.
Breaded vegetables like zucchini is great dipped in horseradish sauce!
Sounds wonderful!
I’ve always cut my horseradish with sour cream so I’ll have to try your recipe it sound yummy. I also use it on corned beef, and a good ol’ pot roast. Love love horseradish☺️
I hope you’ll love it!
I made this with nonfat greek yogurt bc it was all I had on hand but it tasted amazing with my steak and potatoes!
That’s just awesome! Thank you for sharing your excellent review, Jen! I’m so glad it all worked out!
So yummy on baked potatoes or root vegetable cakes! I also like it on hamburgers and as a topping on homemade tomato soup.
Hi Brandi, yes I’m glad you are enjoying this sauce!
This recipe is perfect. It’s always so good and tastes fresh. I love using this for prime rib. It’s definitely better made a few hours in advance and chilled.
Hi Mollie! I’m glad you love the recipe, thank you for sharing.
Excellent! I’d been having loads of trouble finding Woeber’s Sandwich Pal in supermarkets for some months, but now I can make my own. As an added bonus…no soybean oil, xanthan gum and weird chemicals. Thanks!
You’re very welcome! 🙂
Horseradish is part of a Passover Seder. It represents the bitterness of slavery that the Israelites suffered in Egypt for 400 years before God redeemed them through Moses. It is served on a Matzah cracker, and then again on a Matzah cracker with a sweet apple dish added to show that even the most bitter circumstances can be sweetened by the hope we have in God.
I love this sauce with breaded fried cauliflower or broccoli.
So good! Thank you for the feedback.
What does it mean/ how do you strain your horseradish? Thank you!
Hi Sara, we don’t mention “straining” the horseradish in the recipe, was this possibly meant for a different post?
I think they are referring to the ingredients list where it says “2 Tbsp prepared horseradish, drained”
Hi Michelle, Thank you for that note. We do mention draining it to remove access liquid, but not straining it. To drain it you can place it in a small fine mesh colander and press out excess juice using the back of a spoon or a fork.
Hi, I too would like to know how to turn horseradish root into prepared horseradish, this step is missing.
We all remember some horseradish sauce my Mum made in the 1970s. It was so strong my wife made white sauce to mix in with it to calm it down. Twice.
HI Steve, I don’t have a tutorial for that since I don’t grow horseradish root in my yard so I find it more convenient to just buy prepared horseradish.
Sounds really good…although I haven’t tried it yet. I can see having some in my fridge though. If having salmon….all I have to do is add minced dill and maybe a little more Mayo (depending on the strength of the horseradish) and I’ve got a good dill sauce.
Thank you so much for sharing that with me, Dave! I hope you love this recipe!
All I can say is excellent and very easy!! Huge hit with prime rib on New Years Day dinner!! To night is the Greek feta ziti, another of our favorites!!

This is delicious! My husband is not a fan of horseradish and he even loved it! Thank you for the recipe.
That’s great, Janell! I’m so glad to hear that.
Absolutely delicious! Looked at several recipes for creamy horseradish sauce and this one looked particularly good – it was and is!!! Made prime rib for my husband and this was the best accompaniment – he loved it, as did I. Eat it with your baked potato – yum! yum!
