This creamy Horseradish Sauce rivals the best Steakhouse horseradish I’ve tried in both Ruth’s Chris and the Cottonwood Grill. It is excellent paired with prime rib, steak or beef tenderloin.

Horseradish Sauce Recipe:
This horseradish cream sauce is so easy and will impress your dinner guests! It keeps well in the refrigerator for at least 2 weeks and only gets better as the flavors meld.
This sauce is creamy and balanced by the cider vinegar. It isn’t overly pungent and won’t mask the flavors of the excellent prime rib you’ve prepared. If you like your horseradish sauce a little more potent, add horseradish to taste.

What is Prepared Horseradish?
You can purchase jars labeled “prepared horseradish” in the refrigerated section of your grocery store.
If you have a fresh horseradish root growing in your yard, you can make homemade prepared horseradish in a food processor with some water, vinegar and salt but keep in mind homemade is twice as strong as store-bought so add it to taste.
Prepared horseradish is so versatile. We love it in crab salad, coleslaw and “Hron” (a Russian sauce with grated beets).
How to Make Horseradish Sauce:
It really doesn’t get any easier than this: combine all of the ingredients and stir!

Q: What is YOUR favorite way to enjoy Creamy Horseradish Sauce? I would love to hear from you in a comment below!

I made this with champagne vinegar and a little extra horseradish and it is definitely a keeper. Actually made in three times in two days.
I made the Horse Radish Sauce for Christmas dinner – it was delicious and enjoyed by many. thank you. This is a keeper!
So glad to hear that you loved it, Lisa!
I started out with a horseradish root- made the prepared horseradish like you suggested. excellent! But you were right!! Burned my eyes more than an onion! LOL. Proceeded with the other set of directions for the sauce. EXCELLENT! Had a good amount of heat but I like that. Could still taste the prime rib. This is a keeper!!!
I’m so glad to hear this is a keeper, Kristin!
Im using fresh grated horseradish. What adjustments do you think i will need to make? Thank you
Hi Wendy, I have a not on that in the recipe “If you have a fresh horseradish root growing in your yard, you can make homemade prepared horseradish in a food processor with some water, vinegar and salt but keep in mind homemade is twice as strong as store-bought so add it to taste.”
Why vinegar? Never used it in horse radish sauce.
Hi Robyn, This sauce is creamy and balanced by the cider vinegar. It isn’t overly pungent and won’t mask the flavors of the excellent prime rib you’ve prepared.
What could I substitute for apple cider vinegar?
Hi Thyra! White vinegar would be the closest in acidity and taste. Rice vinegar would work too, but it will be milder and slightly sweet. You can also try lemon juice.
THANK YOU NATASHA! Your sauce was so good and hit the spot. I never would of used so much horseradish yet a perfect combination. I always have perfect results with your recipe’s thank you.
I’m so glad you enjoyed it, Valerie!
Almost exactly how I have been making mine for years. The only difference, I add a little more mayo, a splash of lemon juice, and a little fresh dill….excellent recipe
Sounds great, thank you for sharing!
Didn’t have a lot of horseradish flavor. I don’t know what the problem is with it, but it was not very good to me.
Hi Sue, since horseradish cream is the main ingredient, it should have plenty of horseradish flavor normally. Did you substitute anything in the recipe? Also, what kind of horseradish did you use?
Best recipe for a creamy horseradish sauce that compliments my Yoder Smoker YS 640s rotisserie Wagyu prime rib roast without overpowering the meat flavor. I use it prepared at least a week in advance.
Could you use Greek yogurt instead of sour cream and get a similar taste?
Hi Erin, I have not tested an alternative. One of my readers reported using Greek yogurt with great results. I wonder if you could do the same with a dairy-free sour cream or yogurt. Let us know if you experiment.
This is a foolproof delicious sauce! I love it on so much more than steak.
I’m glad you enjoyed it!
I have prepared this recipe for many years. I have made small “adjustment” to alter the texture or taste slightly depending on the venue or persons involved.
Thank you for your great review, Craig! I’m glad to hear you have loved it over the years.
This sounds great and I want to make it for Christmas. How long does it last in the refrigerator?
Hello! This can be safely stored in the fridge for up to 1 to 2 weeks. Just make sure to place it in airtight container to prevent contamination and preserve its freshness!
Have made this a couple of times and it’s great. Out of necessity, we were short on sour cream so I substituted french onion dip and I think the group liked it even better!
That sounds yummy! I’m glad it worked out.
Prime tidbit any fine steak I like it on sandwiches too
So great on both!
Thank you for the recipe. I LOOOOOOOOOOVE horseradish sauce!!!!!! However, I believe it also fares well with chicken and even fish! Thank you again.
Hi Jay! So glad you love it. Yes, I agree, it can be quite delicious with chicken and fish!
I made this to pair with trip tip cooked on the traeger and it was delicious. My husband couldn’t get enough. This will replace the sauce recipe i used before. The only thing different I did was used my homemade mayo vs store bought.
So happy you both loved the recipe! I’m glad you found a new favorite.
Very good proportion of horseradish to sour cream. Some recipes call for double but this is perfect.
Could this be used as a dressing over coleslaw?
Hi Margaret. It might be a bit much as a dressing, but feel free to experiment with it.
