Refrigerator Organization and Tour

Take a peek inside our refrigerator and freezer to see what we keep in there. We’re also sharing ideas for how to organize your refrigerator so food is less likely to spoil or go to waste.

    Refrigerator Organization Video

You’ve seen our dream Kitchen Tour and our Pantry Tour. We’ve had so many requests for a fridge tour so here it is. Enjoy this video tour.

    The Before…

This is what stocking your fridge without a plan looks like. We often had things that went to waste, or we ended up buying things twice when we didn’t realize we still had it on hand. When things are organized, it’s easier to remember how much eggs or celery you have left.

    And After…

Here is how our fridge looks now, so neat and organized. I’m inspired to cook every time I open it. It looks fancy but it’s actually way more practical and foods stay fresh longer because we are storing things correctly.

    How to Organize Your Refrigerator

    1. Grocery Shop – Make a list of what you already have and what you want to stock and go grocery shopping.
    2. Get Storage Containers – once you figure out what you want to stock, buy the storage containers you’ll need to keep things organized i.e. Tupperware, bins, lazy Susan (see list below and make sure they fit your spaces)
    3. Clean out your Fridge – remove all of the food from your refrigerator first. Transfer dairy and meats to a cooler with ice to keep cool. Wipe down all of the drawers and shelves with a damp towel.
    4. Make a Plan – Determine where you are going to store different produce and label drawers to keep things organized. Consider your plan when buying storage containers to make sure they fit.
    5. Re-stock – Fill bins, Tupperware and drawers with produce.
    6. Repeat with the freezer once the fridge is done. This way you don’t risk food defrosting.
    two women organizing refrigerator

We hired Anna of Neat Method to help with organizing our refrigerator and freezer (Anna also helped us organize our Huge Pantry). Anna’s team spent hours deep cleaning, pulling everything out then reorganizing everything efficiently. Having a professional organize a space is such a treat. We included notes for all of the food storage and organization tools that Anna brought. I hope this post inspires you to organize your refrigerator.

    Tips for Refrigerator Organization

    1. Don’t over-fill your fridge. You want air to circulate and you also don’t want things to get blocked or forgotten in the back of the refrigerator. Aim to fill 2/3 full.
    2. Pre-cut fruits and veggies deteriorate faster and don’t last as long so only prep them if you know you need them for a recipe. We do love to slice up pineapple though which seems less likely to overripen in the refrigerator.
    3. Door Storage – Don’t store milk or eggs on the door since that is the warmest spot in your fridge. Store Condiments on the door.
    4. Don’t store fruits and veggies together – Fruit likes low humidity while veggies love higher humidity so it’s best to keep them separate.
    5. Do not wash fruits and vegetables until you’re ready to enjoy.

    Recipes for Meal Prep

Here are the Recipes that we mentioned having stocked in the refrigerator and freezer. We make these on the regular rotation because it makes meal planning and healthy eating easier.

P.S. We keep that small milk container in the fridge for our dreamy Jura Espresso Machine that I told you about in our Kitchen Tour.

    A Peek at the Freezer

We love freezer friendly recipes and love to stock foods like:

We also keep bags of homegrown berries as well as dill and chives and we store frozen lemon juice and zest when we get a ton of lemons from my Mom-in-law.

    Which Refrigerator do we Have?

If anyone is curious, we have a stainless steel built-in Thermador Refrigerator. It is counter-depth with a 30″ wide panel for the refrigerator and an 18″wide panel for the freezer.

This was amazing. Thanks. I’ve never heard of keeping nuts in the fridge. Why should I do that??

Hi Sarah, yes we always keep them in the fridge. Here’s an answer from a quick Google search: “Spoilage is accelerated even more in the presence of light, oxygen, and—you guessed it—heat. Storing nuts (and seeds) in the fridge or freezer limits their exposure to all three of these, and will result in your nuts tasting less bitter and more flavorful vibrant for a longer period of time”

What surprises me is that you have such a small amount of head lettuce, cabbage, tomatoes, celery, etc.! Those fill my crisper drawers. That’s what I use each day. And they stuff my refrigerator.

You can buy Chick Fi la sauce at most grocers if you want a bigger stash. My granddaughter loves it! Hope this helps.

They knew they had a good thing. I think it was smart for them to sell the sauces.

I recently found out that wrapping a whole celery in aluminum foil keeps it fresh for weeks. Just unwrap it and remove as many stalks as you need for the recipe. Then rewrap and store in the fridge.
