Easy Air Fryer Sweet Potato Fries Recipe
These easy homemade Air Fryer Sweet Potato Fries satisfy that craving for ‘fast food’ but are lighter than their deep-fried store-bought frozen counterparts and they’re naturally gluten-free! I slice them and toss them in a bit of oil and seasoning before air-frying to perfection.
We are a potato-loving family, so you can imagine we air-fry fries a lot and my method for cooking sweet potato fries in the air fryer is so easy and delicious. I can tell you from my experience that this will become a go-to recipe.
Air Fryer recipes are perfect when you are limited on time but don’t want to miss out on flavor. For example, I cook Air Fryer Baked Potato or crispy Air Fryer Bacon much faster than putting them in the oven, and the crunch is irresistible.

Ingredients for Air Fryer Sweet Potato Fries
- Sweet Potatoes – any size of sweet potatoes will work, but choose firm potatoes with smooth uniform-colored skin. One pound works great per batch without overcrowding the air fryer basket.
- Oil – We used light olive oil because it has a neutral flavor and a high smoke point. You can also use vegetable oil or avocado oil.
- Seasoning – We love the simple combination of salt, pepper, garlic powder, and paprika, but feel free to experiment here. Maybe try some steak seasoning, cayenne pepper, red pepper flakes, or even cinnamon and nutmeg.
Pro Tip:
When preparing the sweet potatoes, I remove the skins, but you can choose to leave the skins on, which makes prep work even easier. Just be sure to scrub the outside to remove any dirt and dry completely.
How to Make Air Fryer Sweet Potato Fries
These Air Fryer Sweet Potato Fries take less than 15 minutes from start to finish, making them the perfect side dish for any meal from Steak to Baked Chicken Breast to Hamburgers and everything in between.
- Prep the potatoes – rinse, peel, and slice the sweet potatoes into ¼-inch-thick slices, cutting them in uniform size for even cooking. They will shrink slightly when they cook.
- Drizzle oil over fries and toss to combine in a large bowl. Be sure not to use too much oil, since that can make the fries soggy.
- Season – in a small bowl, combine the seasoning ingredients and then sprinkle over the oil-coated fries. Toss the slices to evenly coat in seasoning.
- Air Fry– add the fries in a single layer to the air fryer basket (no need to preheat). Be sure not to overcrowd the basket since the fries need space to crisp up. Air fry in a basket-style air fryer at 375˚F for 12-14 minutes or a toaster oven-style air fryer at 350˚F for 8-10 minutes, shake halfway through cooking. They are ready when the outside is crispy and golden brown.
- Serve immediately, garnished with cilantro or parsley and grated parmesan if desired.

Natasha’s Pro Tip for Crispy Fries:
To ensure your sweet potato fries are crisp, season just before air frying. If you add salt too early, it can draw moisture out of the fries and make them too soft.
Is it Necessary to Soak Sweet Potato Fries?
While soaking in ice water for 30 minutes before cooking fries can help remove excess starch to make the fries extra crisp, I skip this step because it feels like a hassle. First, you have to wait while it soaks, and second, if you don’t thoroughly pat dry all of the fries, they’ll end up too moist. I guess I’m not patient enough for that ordeal when I’m craving fries! It’s supposed to be quick and easy, after all!
How to know when Air Fryer Sweet Potato Fries are Done?
The air fryer cooks quickly, so check your fries at the low end of the cooking time. The type of air fryer and thickness of your slices can affect cooking time. Air fry until the fries are crispy and golden brown on the outside and tender inside. You can add 1-2 minutes for extra crispy fries.

Mine came out perfect. I followed the recipe to a tea. I used one sweet potato. I’m not sure if it was a pound or not but I sliced it into quarter inch strips and followed your directions cooked them for 14 minutes took them out and I use the Chick-fil-A dipping sauce. I’m serving them tomorrow for Mother’s Day and I’m sure my grandkids are gonna go crazy. They’re gonna want more. Thanks Natasha
Hi Liz! You’re very welcome. I’m so glad you enjoyed the recipe.
Hi! Just wondering if air frying these at a higher temperature will ruin them? Thank you!!
Hi Mary! You risk them burning before they are cooked through.
the recipe doesn’t say to soak the potatoes! will they be ok if you don’t soak them?
Hi Cindy, we did not soak them and loved the result!
Hi Natasha;
I don’t have an air fryer per se as it’s an option on my microwave oven. I have yet to try any recipes using it but will definitely try these and let you know how they turn out.
I hope you love it, Nanoue!
I recently bought a cafe range that has a no preheat air frying
Function. Could you give some guidance on how to use it for a recipe such as this. Specifically times/temps
Hi Bob, I haven’t used an oven/ range like that to advise on the outcome. I recommend reading through the oven instructions for any adjustments. If you happen to try this recipe in that Air Fryer, I’d love to know how you like it!
Hi Bob-I have the same oven and the air fryer mode is amazing. I use the air fryer mode specified in recipes. If it calls for 380 I do 375 since the GE cafe is all presets. I hope this helps.
I also have the oven. If you touch the preset temperature, and then touch the temperature, mine gives the option to put the numbers in to change it … such as 380.
Do you not need to soak them in water first? Regular russet air fryer fries usually need to soak Thanks.
Hi Joel, I did not soak them.
What are some main courses that would work well with sweet potato fries as a side?
Hi Susanna! These go great with Sandwiches or burgers !:)
Susanna, try the crock pot pulled pork, the sloppy joe, and the shredded beef on this site. They work great with the fries. Not a lot of work when you get home in the evening. You can also use the sandwiches with the crispy fried zucchini, the mozzarella cheese sticks. All the recipes on this site are great. Thank you Natasha!
Thank you for your comment and compliment, Patricia!
On the Sweet Potati Fries I use Cinnamon/Sugar sprinkled on mine. They’re DELICIOUS!!!
Yum! Thank you so much for sharing that with me.

You’re so kind. Thank you, Toni! I’m happy we can offer our readers at no cost today!
Mine turned out sort of limp. Did I cut them too big? I thought they were a 1/4.” Not sure. Your pictures don’t show how to put them in the basket in the toaster oven. Yours is an electric skillet.
Looking again I see you did use a different basket. Mine has open sides and bottom. Like a basket.
Hi Shery, that is correct, 1/4” is how I cut mine. Make sure to not overcrowd the basket, allowing room for air to circulate. I had mine set for 380F for about 12-14 minutes, flipping halfway. Timing may vary depending on the air fryer style you have. You may need to leave them a bit longer. Air fry until golden brown and crisp on the outside.
I have an air fryer that does not have a basket but 3 shelves I am confused how to use it without a basket please help me
Hi Joyce, I haven’t tried it without a basket, but I imagine it may still work on a pan.
I also have a 3 shelf air fryer. It came with a basket that you can attach inside and it rotates. Works great for fries. If your air fryer did not come with a basket, possibly you can order one.
Delish! I have a toaster oven-style Air Fryer which is quite a bit hotter than basket-types. That said, the temp and timing of the recipe as written was perfect! Thanks for the recipe – I will definitely use it again!
You’re welcome! I’m so happy you enjoyed it, J!
These are so delicious and super crispy! Great recipe, thank you!
