There is a soup for every occasion; Game days, snowy afternoons, restful sick days, or dinner parties. Whether you’re looking for a tasty starter, a satisfying lunch, or a comforting dinner, this collection of over 37 of the BEST soup recipes features our favorites. We categorized them to help you navigate and find whatever you’re craving.

Tips For Making the Best Soup Recipes

When it comes to homemade soup, there is no need to be fancy. Many of these recipes are proof that you can use humble ingredients to make a delicious-tasting soup. Soups are fairly forgiving and you can often use what you have on hand. Don’t have fresh vegetables? You can use frozen or canned in a pinch. Life is busy, give yourself a little grace in the kitchen.

  • The right pot – Use a pot with a heavy bottom that will distribute the heat evenly. We love our 5 1/2 quart Dutch Oven.
  • Using homemade stock such as Chicken Stock or Turkey Stock is easy to make, nutritious, and has a deeper flavor profile than storebought. However, you can use storebought in any of these recipes.
  • Garnish your soup. Not only does it make for a beautiful presentation, but it elevates the flavor and color of your soup. Try a dollop of sour cream; a sprinkle of cheese or bright, fresh herbs; Croutons; tortilla chips, or crispy chopped Air Fryer Bacon.

Pro Tips for Storing Leftover Soup

Soup usually tastes better on the second day, after all of the flavors have infused the broth. Cooking once and being able to get several meals out of one pot of soup is truly a gift. Here are some general rules for storing leftover soup:

  • Cool the soup to room temperature – setting the pot over cold water can speed up the process.
  • Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator.
  • To freeze – portion your soup into freezer-safe bags. Mark the bag with the date, and lay the bag on its side so it freezes flat, allowing for better organization in your freezer.
  • Thaw overnight in the refrigerator or speed thaw over a bowl of cold water (change the water every 30 min). You can also use the defrost setting on your microwave and add water to bring your soup to your desired consistency.

So, grab your favorite Dutch oven or stew pot, and let’s get cooking. Be sure to have a loaf of crusty French Bread or Biscuits to make it a meal!

Best Soup Recipes: Bacon Corn Chowder

5 from 7 votes
Author: Natasha Kravchuk
This Bacon Corn Chowder recipe is one of our favorite soup recipes – loaded with sweet summer corn and crisp, salty bacon. This is a crowd-pleasing chowder that is perfect year-round.
Prep Time: 15 minutes
Cook Time: 30 minutes
Total Time: 45 minutes

Ingredients

Servings: 8 cups

For the Corn Stock:

For the Bacon Corn Chowder:

  • 4 cups corn kernels, (from 4-5 ears of corn), reserve cobs for stock
  • 1 lb. Yukon gold potatoes, 3 medium, peeled and cut into 1/4" thick pieces
  • 1 cup carrot, (1 large) cut into 1/4" dice
  • 1 cup celery, 3 stalks, finely diced
  • 1 1/2 cups onion, (1 large onion), finely diced
  • 4 oz. bacon, (4 slices), chopped
  • 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper, or to taste
  • 2 tsp fine sea salt, plus more to taste
  • 1/4 tsp freshly ground black pepper
  • 2 Tbsp chives, chopped, to garnish

Instructions

How to Make Corn Stock:

  • Cut the kernels from the cobs and set kernels aside for making chowder.* Place the bare cobs in a soup pot.
  • Add 1 1/2 cups milk, 4 cups broth, and 1 cup cream to the pot. Bring mixture to a boil and then reduce heat and simmer uncovered for 20 minutes while you prepare the chowder. Use tongs to remove and discard the cobs before using corn stock in step 3.

How to Make Corn Chowder:

  • Place a 5 1/2 quart Dutch or soup pot oven over medium-high heat. Add chopped bacon and cook until browned, stirring occasionally. With a slotted spoon, remove bacon bits and set aside. Do not rinse the pot.
  • Add chopped celery, onion, and carrot into the same pot and cook in the bacon fat, uncovered, stirring occasionally, for 7-8 min or until the onion is soft.
  • Add sliced potatoes, corn kernels, salt, black pepper, and cayenne pepper. Pour corn stock into the pot, bring to a light boil then simmer uncovered until the potatoes are tender (approximately 10-15 minutes). Season with more salt and pepper to taste**.
  • Ladle into bowls and sprinkle with reserved bacon and chopped chives to garnish.

Notes

*After cutting the corn off the cobs, remove as many of the silk threads as possible to give your Bacon Corn Chowder a creamier, smoother consistency.
**Corn naturally has varying degrees of sweetness. If your corn is super sweet, add a little more salt to balance the sweetness.
For a Creamier Soup: Blend 1/4 of the soup in a blender until smooth then return it to your Dutch oven and stir it into the rest of your chowder.

These soup recipes are quite nice. Not as good as the Greek chicken with rice avgolemono, or the Greek giouvarlakia (meatball soup). You will have to try them.
I can share the recipes if you want.
