Air Fryer Chicken Wings (Extra Crispy!)

These Air Fryer Chicken Wings have crisp salty skin with a hint of garlic and lemon pepper in every bite. These are seasoned to perfection and cook so fast with no marinating required!

We love crispy baked chicken like my Mom’s famous Chicken Drumsticks these Garlic Dijon Baked Chicken Legs or baked Honey Glazed Chicken but the air fryer is our new best friend for chicken because it’s so much faster and memorably crispy!

Air Fryer Chicken Wings Recipe:

Chicken wings in the air fryer is brilliant and you will be making chicken way more often if you try them in the air fryer. The forced circulating hot air makes the skin super crisp which is difficult to achieve in a conventional oven and the center is perfectly cooked, tender and juicy.

Air fried chicken wings cook time is just 16 minutes (3 times faster than a traditional oven). There’s no need to preheat an air fryer which makes this the fastest crispy chicken wings recipe.

Can I Double the Recipe?

For all-around crispy chicken wings, it’s best to keep the wings in a single layer. If you have a larger air fryer like our Cuisinart model, you can double everything. When doubling, air fry for 18-22 minutes, or until the skin is crisp, flipping the wings half way. Bake time will vary based on the surface area of your air fryer basket.

What is the Best Air Fryer?

There are 2 very different styles of air fryers. The first type is a toaster oven style with a little oven door like this Cuisinart model that we have, this Cosori model that my sister has, or this fancy one by Breville.

The second type is a slide-in drawer/basket type like the Phillips air fryer, Gourmia or Nuwave brands. We prefer the Cuisinart toaster oven style air fryer because it can accommodate more food and serves a variety of functions. It replaced our old toaster oven because it air fries, bakes, broils and toasts.

Can I Bake these in a traditional oven?

It takes significantly longer to achieve crispy chicken wings in the oven. To bake these chicken wings in a conventional oven, preheat oven to 400˚F and bake for 45 minutes to 1 hour, or until crispy, flipping the wings after 30 minutes.

How to Make Air Fryer Chicken Wings:

The dry rub for these chicken wings is so simple with our go-to spices for baked, sautéed or air fried chicken. All you need is garlic salt and lemon pepper.

Ingredients for air fryer chicken with wings, drummettes, garlic salt and lemon pepper

Toss the wings in a little oil and the 2 seasonings, arrange them on the basket and bake right away. You can let them marinate if you prefer but there’s no need to pre-marinate.

These Air Fried Chicken Wings have a crisp salty skin with a tender center. Pair them with fresh celery and avocado ranch to dip and let the snacking begin!

These came out great! My “go to” recipe from now on! Super easy, too!!

I cooked them a little bit longer, about 9 minutes a side. Super crispy, just the way I like them!

Make sure you dry the wings thoroughly. It’s exceptional to dry them on a rack in your fridge overnight tossed with a little baking powder or cornstarch. This will make the skin extra crispy.

The recipe: 5 Stars. Works perfectly on my little Elite air fryer. However, I am on a mission to warn everyone that full-sized range air fryers take MUCH longer than the little oven cooking times. I was so looking forward to making this recipe with my new Samsung oven that comes with both convection and air fryer mode, but I am now almost an hour into what should have been a 16-minute cook time for these chicken wings and they are barely browned. I’m pulling out my Elite to cook little batches while my oven is barely able to cook one single large batch

sounds delish, but your SALT content is outrageous for a healthy adult. 52% sodium for 4 ounces of bone-in wings; people will likely eat twice that many wings with make the salt 104% of daily dosage. Try garlic powder rather than garlic salt.

I just wanted to pop in and add my two cents to the salt issue. Mostly because it really bothers me when people criticize others for things they don’t know about. The US recommendations of 2500mg/day of sodium are very low. There are other countries currently upping their intake guidelines to numbers around 5000 – twice what ours is in the US. So if you live in one of those places, for example, it’s only 25% of your salt intake – which then makes it no big deal, am I right? Remember, it’s still the same amount of salt. For me personally, since I started following a whole food diet and eliminating processed foods, have found that I get incredible migraines if I don’t have enough salt (my sweet spot is right around 6000 mg/day – one day under is no big deal but two or more in a row and I’m guaranteed a headache). Everyone is different. If you personally don’t like salt (or are afraid of it), just don’t use it, but please don’t harp on this woman for using salt to make delicious food. I love salt and thanks for your recipe, Natasha!!

Hi Natasha. All of your recipes that I have tried have been spectacular. I just bought a 7 qt. Power XL air fryer and an Instant Pot 8qt. Duo Nova pressure cooker. Both for different recipes, but do you have a recipe for air fried Buffalo chicken wings? Mild please. 🙂 Thanks.

fist time using my air fryer productively! Next time I will add more garlic 🙂 My pcs were not small so I had to add a few more minutes. I did a double layer on wire racks and it took 20+ mins with turning as well as rotating the top rack to the bottom and bottom up. Will do again. The second batch was don’t in a single layer and OMG were they beautiful and tasty. Pics next time!

Made these today! It was just as simple as you showed in your video and explained in the blog. There are 8 people in my family. I tripled the recipe and used my convection oven because…tripled the recipe! They were devoured. Served them with celery, radishes, ranch dressing and Frank’s hot sauce. This will be on repeat! Thank you!

I rarely leave comments on recipes, but this one was so perfect, I just had to! I already love the garlic salt/lemon pepper combination (it’s what I regularly use when I’m oven roasting broccoli, baby carrots, and sweet potatoes), and it’s perfect for wings! I was a little concerned that the cooking time wouldn’t be enough, but they came out perfectly cooked! Nice and crispy on the outside, very juicy on the inside. This is now my go-to recipe for cooking wings in the air fryer. Thank you!!

You have to toss them every 5 minutes or so. Also, the cooking time will be a bit longer, well, a lot longer if you are doing a large batch. I just did 36 wings in a dual basket Ninja, and it took 15+10+10+5 to get them to perfection. One thing you can do to crisp is add some baking powder to the mix.

Hi Debby, I haven’t tried, and maybe if you have a larger air fryer, but from what I understand, it isn’t recommended to layer that way in my air fryer and I think my rack levels in my air fryer are too close together for them to fit in 2 layers.

This is a fantastic recipe. Crispy chicken wings in less than 20 mins is a big win! The only thing that didnt work for me was adding both garlic salt and lemon pepper together. Hi Natasha, I am so glad to see the photo of your setup to use the Cuisinart AirFryer for the wings. I used the wing recipe and instructions from Cuisinart recipe booklet and didn’t care for it. The Cuisinart recipe booklet states to “Place the AirFryer Basket onto the baking pan.” in all their AF recipes. You have the basket on the rack and the oven pan w/foil below. Is this how you do all AirFry? Can’t wait to try out wings per your setup and recipe.
